Primo Michele Levi was an Italian-Jewish chemist, anti-fascist resistance fighter, Holocaust survivor, and acclaimed author. Over the course of his career, he wrote a diverse body of work, including novels, memoirs, short story collections, essays, and poetry.
Primo Levi is best known for his powerful memoirs about surviving the Holocaust, but there was much more to him than his literary legacy. A chemist, thinker, and keen observer of human nature, Levi's life was filled with remarkable experiences that continue to fascinate readers today.

Hard to keep track but I think this is the third time this particular memorial has been defaced.

Ze maakten het #zyklonB voor #auschwitz en ontvolkten het dorpje #monowitz voor #auschwitz3 waar het gegroeide en gefuseerde concern #IGfarben werd gevestigd. Formeel geen vernietigingskamp maar dat was ook niet nodig met #auschwitsbirkenau op 5 kilometer lopen. #PrimoLevi zat er en schreef zijn ervaringen op in #isditeenmens.

Mi decido a leggere da cima a fondo il capolavoro di #PrimoLevi: trovai questa edizione per la scuola ad una svendita un paio d'anni fa, tascabile e con la copertina avvolta da quella plastica che si usava per non rovinare i libri.
Inizio a leggerlo, sperando mi distragga dai miei pensieri.
Ma alle 22.30 arriva il primo schiaffo, e il pensiero corre a chi ancora oggi, dopo ottant'anni, nega l'evento politico più tragico della storia europea. -

J'ai eu la chance de n'être déporté à Auschwitz qu'en 1944, alors que le gouvernement allemand, en raison de la pénurie croissante de maind'oeuvre, avait déjà décidé d'allonger la moyenne de vie des prisonniers à éliminer, améliorant sensiblement leurs conditions de vie et suspendant provisoirement les exécutions arbitraires individuelles. Aussi, en fait de détails atroces, mon livre n'ajoutera-t-il rien à ce que les lecteurs du monde entier savent déjà sur l'inquiétante question des camps d'extermination. Je ne l'ai pas écrit dans le but d'avancer de nouveaux chefs d'accusation, mais plutôt pour fournir des documents à une étude dépassionnée de certains aspects de l'âme humaine. Beaucoup d'entre nous, individus ou peuples, sont à la merci de cette idée, consciente ou înconsciente, que « l'étranger, c'est l'ennemi ». Le plus souvent, cette conviction sommeille dans les esprits, comme une infection latente; elle ne se manifeste que par des actes isolés, sans lien entre eux, elle ne fonde pas un système. Mais lorsque cela se produit, lorsque le dogme informulé est promu au rang de prémisse majeure d'un syllogisme, alors, au bout de la chaîne logique, il yale Lager; c'est-à-dire le produit d'une conception du monde poussée à ses plus extrêmes conséquences avec une cohérence rigoureuse; tant que la conception a cours, les conséquences nous menacent. Puisse l'histoire des camps d'extermination retentir pour tous comme un sinistre signal d'alarme. Je suis conscient des défauts de structure de ce livre, et j'en demande pardon au lecteur. Le besoin de raconter aux « autres », de faire participer les «autres », avait acquis chez nous, avant comme après notre libération, la violence d'une impulsion immédiate, aussi impérieuse que les autres besoins élémentaires; c'est pour répondre à un tel besoin que j'ai écrit mon livre; c'est avant tout en vue d'une libération intérieure. De là son caractère fragmentaire: les chapitres en ont été rédigés non pas selon un déroulement logique, mais par ordre d'urgence. Biographie
Sa vie : Primo Levi est né à Turin le 31 janvier 1919 dans une famille juive mais peu praticante. Sa judéité, Primo Levi n'en prendra réellement conscience qu'avec l'apparition de la mentalité antisémite en Italie, vers 1938. Après avoir suivi des études de chimie, il part s'installer à Milan. En 1943, il s'engage dans la Giustizia e Liberta (organisation antifasciste installée dans les Alpes italiennes) et se fait arrêter le 13 décembre de la même année, à l'âge de 24 ans, par la milice fasciste. Il est interné au camp de Carpi-Fossoli, tout près de la frontière autrichienne.
En février 1944, le camp, qui était jusque-là géré par une administration italienne, passe en mains allemandes : c'est la déportation vers Auschwitz. Il est libéré le 27 janvier 1945, date de la libération du camp par les soviétiques. Une fois la guerre finie, il épousera Lucia Morpugo, aura 2 enfants et dirigera une entreprise de produits chimiques. Pendant les derniers mois de sa vie, Primo Levi fut très affecté par la montée du révisionnisme et de l'indifférence. Profondément déprimé, le 11 avril 1987, il se jette dans la cage d'escalier de son immeuble. Sur sa tombe sont inscrits son nom et 174 517, son matricule à Auschwitz.Primo Levi : l'homme
Les déportés ont parfois honte de ce qui leur est arrivé : Levi, quant à lui, utilise toute situation pour témoigner de ce qui lui est arrivé. C'est une façon de résister : un combat contre l'oubli au quotidien ; son langage, sa personne même, sont des preuves qui appuient ce qu'il a écrit. Ferdinando Camon décrit ainsi Primo Levi dans l'avant-propos de son recueil de conversations :
"Levi ne criait pas, n'insultait pas, n'accusait pas, parce qu'il ne voulait pas crier, il voulait beaucoup plus : faire crier. Il renonçait à sa propre réaction en échange de notre réaction à tous. Son raisonnement portait sur la longue durée. Sa modération, sa douceur, son sourire -qui avait quelque chose de timide, de presque enfantin- étaient en réalité ses armes".Primo Levi : l'écrivain
Son premier livre, Si c'est un homme, paru en 1947, est une sorte de journal de sa déportation et l'un des premiers témoignages de la vie au camp d'Auschwitz. Il écrira d'autres ouvrages tels que La Trêve en 1963 (sous le pseudo de Damiano Malabaila), ainsi que des fictions inspirées par son expérience de chimiste telles que Les Naufragés et Les Rescapés en 1986 qui sera son dernier livre, le plus sombre de tous.
