  1. Progress at Pride

It’s been three days now since Pride in London and I think it’s time to post a few pictures to show I was actually there.

My partner took a bit of persuading to come along – he’s not out (for good reasons) and does not like the idea of having pictures on the internet. He detests social media too and, unusually for a person his age, has no instagram or tiktok or anything else.

He thought it would be hard to avoid being pictured. Anyway, we found a fairly unobtrusive spot and although he was a bit nervous at first he soon relaxed and started to enjoy it. Some people took pics of the crowds lining the route, but there was a convenient tree for him to hide behind. We stayed several hours, actually, and the parade was still passing our place at the end of Piccadilly when we left, so it must have abeen a very long parade.

A wonderful thing happened, halfway through our stay at the Parade: we held hands in public for the first time. That may not seem much but it meant a great deal to me. I often hear people saying that Pride is no longer needed, but remember that not everyone has an understanding family nor grew up in an accepting environment. It’s taken two and a half years to get this far. It’s not the sort of “progress” that the “pride progress” flag represesents

  2. And that's another #PrideinLondon done! No 25 in my case... about 20,000 steps and nearly 1,000 shots since Friday evening when it started for me. Everything hurts! I'm spending today on the sofa doing nothing (apart from some photo editing later!). Would a comely ephebe come by and feed me grapes?

  3. LOL, PiL felt the need to release a statement on IG saying Madge wouldn't be performing

  4. Proud to be out today with #PrideInLondon - happy Pride!

  5. Rumours, probably highly unfounded, that Madonna may put in an appearance on the main stage

  6. The host in Piccadilly Circus just asked Peter Tatchell what is name is.... 🤦‍♂️

  7. The Antis are at their usual position, fewer and fewer every year, thankfully. I think it's a different group this year (different placards). Interesting to note the US colouring of their flag. The "nice" look much... well nicer...

  8. The parade is about to start, maybe (late!)

  9. I'm in Park Lane, I've collected my media pass. Groups are gathering the temperature is slowly rising. They even have a faux Stonewall Inn on wheels...

  10. Out and About in London

I spent today in London, wandering about and visiting various locations I haven’t seen for a while, including the Science Museum (near where I’m staying) and Tate Modern (not near where I’m staying). The Science Museum has changed quite a bit since my last visit there many moons ago, but it still reminded me of Toby Esterhase’s description in Smiley’s People:

In the Science Museum, top floor. All those airplanes. Lot of kiddies eating crisps.

There was indeed a lot of kiddies, this being peak season for school trips, and the aeroplanes are still there. On the way from the Science Museum to Tate Modern, I bumped into some members of the union Unite from the Institute of Cancer Research who were at outside South Kensington tube station protesting about pay and conditions, and promised to send a message of solidarity on social media, which I hereby do.

Unite MembersOn the way to Tate Modern

Tate Modern was really good, if also busy with a lot of kiddies. I particularly enjoyed The Tanks, in one of which there is an eerily lit exhibition of Giacometti scupltures and another an installation by Nora Chipaumire called Gadzi, which includes sculpted and audio elements between which you can sit or move around. One of the interesting things about installations like this is watching what other people do: some were sitting on the large loudspeakers playing the music, others moving around to experience changes in the sonic experience.

After Tate Modern I dropped in at the HQ of the Elon Musk Appreciation Society Royal Society in Carlton House Terrace. This is the time of year for the annual Summer Science Exhbition. Note the Pride Progress flag flying outside. Inside was another lot of kiddies but quite a few adults too. Out of the thirteen exhibits, three were directly relevant to my own science area: one from the Simons Observatory, one from Durham University about galaxy formation simulations, and also one from Euclid. Here is Andy Taylor from Edinburgh at the latter, explaining B-modes to visitors:

The Pride Progress flag reminds me to explain, as if you hadn’t realized, that tomorrow (4th July) is the day of the Pride in London parade. Having a meeting to attend this week and another thing to do in London next week, it proved impossible to resist staying over the weekend. Now I’ll have to finish this blog as I have to meet a certain person off the train who is coincidentally flying in especially tonight to stay with me for this very special weekend.

P.S. It was very warm today, and set to get even warmer going into next week…

  14. Parade hasn’t moved for half an hour. No idea why. It started and then completely stopped. #PrideinLondon

  15. On my way to London for a day of photography.
I hope I can really capture the energy and vibes, I'm still new to this kind of massive events.

  16. Sadly, most of the selfies I took with others were ruined by an unseen smear on my front-facing camera. I do not have the skills to rescue them, but these pics were the few I managed to make almost presentable, featuring many pups I can't remember the name of, and also @PupRufusAD and @Pupchas doing a little #PupAllTheStations nab at Waterloo (Underground) station, and a member of the crowd who was better turned out than 90% of the entire parade. #PrideinLondon

  17. So, London Pride happened over the weekend, and I decided (probably foolishly) to head down and take part in it. Met the wonderful @PupRufusAD and @Pupchas for the first time, and it was joy to finally meet them after all their #PupAllTheStations submissions. Plus got to see RubberFroggy again, this time in his skunk gear. After the parade, I spent the day with my amazing loverpup @Shade and even managed to re-pup Finsbury Park (Underground) station! A very good day was had. #PrideInLondon

  18. Well that was #PrideInLondon #Pride2024 thanks to everyone who took part yesterday! 🏳️‍🌈

  19. Do I know anybody at #LondonPride right now? Where should I go?

Is anybody at the #Keshet thing? (What's the story there?)

  20. Our Chairman is ready for our group to gather for today's #PrideInLondon! #Pride2024

  21. Today is London Pride - or rather “Pride in London” - the corporate entity that inhabits the husk of one of the world’s oldest pride marches.

Among its sponsors are a tabloid newspaper that has run more anti-trans stories in the past 5 years than any other single issue.

Year after year they fail to address fundamental complaints about inclusion and safety, corporate interference, and a lack of representation in their leadership.

I throw no shade at anyone attending - there’s no major alternative and I know how important pride can be.

But we deserve better. You deserve better.

No pride in corporate pinkwashing. No pride in rainbow capitalism.

Pride in our diversity, in our community, in our resilience and strength and love.

  22. Embassy staff took part in the #PrideInLondon march on Saturday.

Ahead of Pride, 43 Heads of Diplomatic Missions in the UK joined together as Diplomats for Equality London, reaffirming their commitment to defending and advancing LGBTIQ rights. Germany and Mexico are the current co-chairs of the Equal Rights Coalition, an intergovernmental body of 42 Member States dedicated to the protection of the rights of LGBTI persons.

  23. Thanks to everyone who joined, cheered, and celebrated with us at #PrideInLondon — it was an incredible experience! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

The #LiberalDemocrats led on delivering same-sex marriage 10 years ago, led on overthrowing the Tory’s vile Section 28, and now lead on standing up for #TransRights.

We've always been there, and always will be for every member of our diverse communities. If you believe in securing #LGBTQ+ rights, stand with us!
