"The searing harm of Mr. King’s story...is that it plants doubt into the many sisters and brothers out there who want to find us and come back home. It leaves other truly Indigenous authors overlooked. It crowds out our own truthful stories from education curricula, from the zeitgeist, from Canadian arts spaces. It also makes the racists and denialists smile." -

Robert Jago takes a more critical view, writing in today's Toronto Star that the "revelation of King’s true ancestry was far from a surprise to Indigenous people. This has been a persistent rumour in Indian Country for years."

I'm sure many have you have heard the buzz about #thomasking...he's not #cherokee at all, not #indigenous, and never was.
According to King, he's devastated by this knowledge claiming he never knew and this has given him an identity crisis.
What do you think? Is he a #pretendian? Or was it honestly a case of mistaken heritage?

Sainte-Marie recently confirmed that she is an American citizen, not a Canadian citizen. Questions remain around her Indigenous identity. Apparently, the awards have been stripped because she doesn't meet eligibility requirements.

Finding out more reasons why my paternal ancestry is so very undocumented. Apparently, the records house for Newfoundland burnt down in the early 1950s. And I found out that the Salvation Army "teacher" at my dad's "school" (Newfoundland equivalent of Indian day school/residential school) destroyed all the records of students there.
Dad ran away and lied about his age to join the military.
Meanwhile, on Instagram, people I don't even know and have never met or spoken to are telling people I'm a Pretendian. I sure hate the whole Pretendian thing. Yes, there are liars out there trying to capitalize on false identities, but there are also modern-day witch hunters, and they are after me. Nothing I say will appease them. Blood quantum and colonialism are a helluva ride and I'd like off. #ResidentialSchools #BloodQuantum #Pretendian #WitchHunt

There is no denying she has been welcomed into the Piapot First Nation family and has worked tirelessly throughout her life to uplift Indigenous people and issues and for that she deserves respect and admiration and I for one will continue to respect her for that.
But the evidence gathered by the CBC, specifically the birth certificate from the town hospital where she was born, is irrefutable. Buffy St. Marie (Born Beverly Jean SantaMaria to Italian and Engilsh parents) is not of Indigenous ancestry.

The Northern Great Plains History Conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota is platforming Kent Blansett, a well-known alleged #Pretendian who will give the keynote lecture on Friday night. The topic of his lecture is about the siege at Wounded Knee in 1973, commemorating the 50th anniversary. Conference organizers were told by an actual Indigenous historian that this was a bad idea.
