  1. I've reached the point in the counting process where I ask myself why am I doing this?

As you can see it's not actually all that far along, but they have to be done tonight because I bought them as seconds on Sunday and they are absolutely not going to last another day.

Every year that question comes at a different point in the process of every food item I can.

I always TRY to make sure I have nothing else booked up against tomato days. And fuck knows those are my laziest things. I roast everything; slip the skins off (not even off everything), and then make the sauces or the jars of just plain tomatoes.

This year I'm probably not even going to take any skins off of anything because I have moved to wide mouth jars (hence the 200 lids arriving), which means I can fit the immersion blender right inside the jar before pouring it into the pot.

Half of them I can with roasted shepherd peppers (oddly, I do take the skins off of these, but they're super easy to remove off a roast pepper) because it really makes a super rich sauce. I don't think I'll even be making anything other than pizza sauce and plain tomatoes this year. Lazy. Busy.

Okay, those peaches have definitely cooled off. Now to go skin them, cut them up, and put them in jars with light syrup and sour salt.

  2. Canning season!

I found a Canadian company that manufactures mason jar lids.

I really wish you could just pick them up in stores, but the first time purchase discount plus ordering 200 of them neutralized the shipping cost, and they work out to a little $0.50 each, which is about 25 cents less per item than the cheapest rate in stores (for wide mouth lids).

This year I'm planning to do all of my tomatoes in wide mouth jars, though the sauces &c. will be in the regular size jars.

  6. A rare culinary post...

Every now and then, I get the notion Brussels sprouts would make a great—if labour intensive—sauerkraut prime mover.

    Anyone tried them?

  7. "What are you doing awake at this hour, Gigi?"

    Making motherfucking pickles.
    Dill AND sweet.

I bought a basket of cucumbers two days ago, and then yesterday I went to fucking Costco, and now I have no fucking room in my fridge* so I have to make these fucking pickles before the cucumbers go bad.

No, it was NOT well thought out.
Not going to water bathe them until tomorrow.

    * (But I do have 2% chocolate milk, so it's not all bad.)

  9. And with the first *poink*, the 2026 summer canning season has commenced (for me)!

  10. Have you ever tried making your own chutney or pickle? It's super easy and tastes so good. You can even sterilise jam jars in a dishwasher if you have one (oven if you don't). This one is a good place to start. Apple & Red Onion Chutney.

  11. I swear, next year I'm going to can all of my tomatoes in wide mouth jars.

It is so much more convenient to just put the immersion blender right in.

As I get older, I find more and more ways to make this shit easier.

  12. Put my dinner in the slow cooker. Leftover roast beef, home canned garden tomatoes and salsa (last jar from 2024), guajillo + 2 x garden salsa peppers, spices.

Comfort food for a cold night.

Now I can go savour today's news.

Also, bonus of spiced tomato chutney. Finally harvested all the unripe tomatoes from the garden, which had been neglected. Smoked paprika, ginger, Kashmiri chilli and nigella seeds are the main flavourings for this. Unbearable wait before it can be snaffled.

  14. Playing d&d (remotely* as we have since Covid started) and thinking about going outside to pick the last of the tomatoes and eggplants from the polytunnel since it dropped below freezing at some point last night.

    Green tomato relish or mincemeat?
Probably the latter since I picked up apples on sale a couple of days ago.

I guess I should also take advantage of the day off to dehydrate the apples and basil that is still alive. Or maybe pesto for freezing.

    Hmm.
    Decisions.

Going to run and take pics and probably grab the tomatoes before my turn comes back around.

    _____

Okay, I went to take photos and discovered very little had survived in the tunnel, except one small eggplant, that, now that I think about it, I should have grabbed to bring inside with the peppers.

So I picked what was worth grabbing.
(I really need a basket with a handle. I think it all the time, especially when putting stuff in sad bags for collecting.)

    * one of the benefits of playing remotely is I can simultaneously do a bunch of low-attention tasks like cleaning and editing simple videos, like the one I am going to drop later on Why People Need To Counter Caryma Sa'd's Many, Many Lies. I still hope we'll be able to get back to gaming in person at some point. I've been playing with this particular set of people almost as long remotely as we did in person.

  16. I wanted to take a picture of my hard work, but my hard work doesn't all fit on the counter.

There's a box of pizza sauce that I could not cram up here.

  17. And when these motherfuckers finish their bath, that is the last of the ... oh no. I just remembered the catsup.

I was so happy thinking that I wasn't going to have to deal with these specific tomatoes anymore, but... nope.

It wasn't even the end of tomatoes altogether, as I have to deal with the green and ripening selection from the garden.

I need to remember how wonderful these will be in January, and make it my mantra or something.
