  7. The awesome Josie Clarke, PhD student of Copenhagen University working in our #PRECISE project on using observations to bias correct modelled accumulation rates over the #Greenland ice sheet , really cool application of #MachineLearning now we finally have enough data to make a stab at it #DGrIS25

  10. So, you're interested in surface mass balance ? New dataset just dropped updating the old SUMUP (and AntSMB) datasets for both Greenland and Antarctica - led by GEUS Baptiste Vandecrux +ft. contributions from our @dmidk.bsky.social #PRECISE project PhD Clement Cherblanc arcticdata.io/catalog/view...

  11. My colleague in #PRECISE @Hansen_Nicolaj will present some results from @PolarRES + some early thoughts on developing #SMB emulators at #AGU24 next week, so that's on the #AcrWriWeek list for tomorrow.

  13. My 30 Day Map challenge didn't really survive beyond the first week - too much overwhelm in the day job, but that's ok, I hadn't really expected it to. But the first half of this week is the culmination of #AcWriMo's efforts to pay myself first - the #PRECISE writing week (3 days actually) intended to finalise some papers.

  15. TFW I've been struggling on progress on a paper for about 9 years*. Chat with #PRECISE collaborators yesterday revived interest in problem + this am on way to Saturday activities with kids I had a blinding insight into how to progress. It's exciting + potentially quite important implications for ice sheet projections.
Now need to try + not get frustrated I won't be able to try ideas for at least 2 days + likely more than a week given my calendar.

*yes really 9 years. It's a slow burner.

  17. @atthenius @Ruth_Mottram We were discussing a Jax based ocean model today - Verosone of our collaborators in the #PRECISE project developed it.

    It sounds very impressive..

  21. #Actuaries have issued a call for more #precise #climate #risk #assessments, highlighting the concept of the “🔹risk of ruin🔹,” which refers to a critical juncture beyond which global society might be unable to adapt to the ramifications of climate change.

A collaboration between the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries ( #IFoA ) and the University of Exeter has resulted in a report titled
💥“Climate Scorpion: the sting is in the tail,” 💥which makes a case for employing risk management strategies traditionally used in financial services to evaluate and convey the risks associated with climate change.

The report advocates for the consideration of “worst-case” scenarios regarding climate change. It also issued a warning that the pace of global warming could be #accelerating, with the likelihood it could surpass the 1.5°C target becoming increasingly plausible.
This could lead to several tipping points, including the #collapse of the #Greenland #ice #sheets, which could have long-lasting consequences.
Unexpected sensitivity to climate change is also a concern, as what is often described as a “#tail-#risk” might have a higher probability of resulting in significant temperature increases.
Methodologies are also now suggesting that a doubling of #greenhouse #gas concentrations could lead to #temperature rises of 7°C or more.

  25. This new paper by @agrinsted (or rather #preprint, it's in #EGUSphere for #TheCryosphere in #OpenReview) is the first one to be submitted under our new #PRECISE project on #IceSheets + #SeaLevel - that officially kicks off next week. It was a very welcome return to the field of #crevasses #Ice + #Fracture that I worked on for my PhD.
Really nice work by Aslak and a clue as to what we're going to be working on the next few years! fediscience.org/@agrinsted/111

  33. In an , what would the three crew members do ?

@sciguyspace : The biggest concern is the on board the spacecraft . They are used to calculate a entry for the Soyuz to ensure it in a designated area of . Without the flight computers, the procedure would have to be done . This is but far from optimal, as the area in which the Soyuz might land would be vast arstechnica.com/science/2022/1

    Me baking:
