I read The Gift, from Marcel Mauss and realized how bad I was romanticizing #precapitalist societies. They had cool practices, like the Maoris who believed your spirit is carried along every labor/property you give, haunting the other until it's returned to you as another gift, making wealth circulation obligatory (and anti theft/exploitation). But Potlatch was all about competition and hierarchy, and women where traded as property😔. At least the winner was the greatest giver, not the taker!
