When I was a freshman in high school (around fourteen years of age, for non-Americans), my friend and I determined that a phenomenal yet harmless prank to pull would be to take his mom’s leftover spaghetti in red sauce and distribute it through the school sealed inside condoms. Through the most epic of best-three-out-of-five rock-paper-scissors battles, I was determined to be the woeful one who had to purchase the condoms.
Now, I was fourteen, and I was even more outwardly autistic and socially unaware than I am now; this was before I underwent any kind of voluntary CBT to rectify that. As I biked up to the local pharmacy to make my purchase, I realized that I could possibly be mistaken for a promiscuous teen—and I didn’t want that, as I’m a totally responsible Christian boy. Once I found the cheapest condoms I could buy, and walked up the counter, I felt compelled to clarify to the clerk, who would otherwise be so misinformed as to my motive: “Oh, that’s for spaghetti.”
Even at that time in my journey towards limited social aptitude, I immediately realized: I’m a fucking idiot. The clerk who likely would’ve thought nothing of it aside from a brief “lol this kid defs ain’t pullin’ bitches” now has a perplexed, bewildered yet all muted expression, apparently trying to process what sin I’m committing with such a combination. I turned an otherwise uneventful transaction into something that’s certainly seared into both of our minds, and I’ll never let myself down for it.
Anyway, my friend only had enough spaghetti for one condom, so, the next day, we placed it in the bathroom by the gymnasium. It quietly disappeared and we never heard of it since.

I was just going to type “When I was younger…” and an image of an old skin and bones guy with a scraggly white beard wearing a red flannel shirt and suspenders sitting in a rocking chair with a gaggle of children sitting in a semi-circle in front of him popped into my mind. And while looking down at those children he leans forward, and with one hand on his knee and the other waving his pipe around in the air he says, “Why when I was your age children…”
When I was going to school the prompt question was phrased as nature vs. nurture and I can say I didn’t care much about back then either.
Why when I was your age children I didn’t care much about anything.
Unless you’re a psychologist, or a behavioral psychologist or whatever, why does it matter?
Now on to the important stuff. Today Rojie asks: Write about a time when you felt like you had imposter syndrome. Well, to continue being honest, I don’t really know. I frequently have bouts of self-doubt and I can often see successes in life as luck or just having been in the right place at the right time. That’s how I frequently think about my writing and I haven’t really thought about it, but it’s probably the reason I write stuff and file it away and never submit anything for publication. I dismiss any compliments I might receive as the person offering them just trying to be kind. If grade school was good for anything, it was honesty. Because while getting picked last in gym class for whatever unpleasant thing we might have had to do that day was painful, it was at least honest. No false sincerity there, no jock pranks there, just what I knew to be true there. So this, blogging – yesterday, tomorrow, right now – would be one of those times I feel like I had imposter syndrome.
I just watched the movie Us the other day which was all about imposters. It was a good movie for what it was, but I hated the ending. Endings like that can ruin the entire movie for me and I think the only reason they’re done is to generate buzz. I’m wondering now if it’s not done because of a sense of imposter syndrome by the writer or director? Maybe they don’t think the movie is good enough as it stands so they add something to get people talking? In this case the ending really contradicted the plot of the movie so it brought the whole movie into question.
