  1. Saving local news also means saving the archives 🗞️

Not just the physical clips and photos, but the digital stories too. When they vanish, communities lose their only record of themselves their memory, identity, and history.

From newsroom moves to closures and broken tech, this loss is already happening quietly across the country.

There is still time to act and protect what remains.

  3. Update. While the #ThomsonReuters employee letter is not yet public, #Poynter quotes from it: "The detrimental actions of #ICE, and the #DHS’s lack of oversight and direct falsehoods regarding the situation in #Minnesota and other cities, makes us question if our investigative products and services are being used in accordance with our mission and values, as well as in accordance with the law and our nation’s constitution.”

The same article links to a similar letter from #RELX employees to management about a $22.1 million contract with ICE. RELX is the parent company of #LexisNexis and #Elsevier.

That letter is public. From the RELX employee letter: "We are deeply concerned that RELX is directly aiding the separation of families, the removal of children from schools and the death of individuals in detention centers."

RELX deleted a page from its FAQ, posted during the Biden administration, saying that its tools would not be used for these purposes. But here's a copy from the #WaybackMachine.

Let me get this straight ... if a spouse, coworker, boss, or child "MISLEAD" you like Poynter said about two important issues, would you say they
    #1. LIED
    or
    #2. MISLEAD

Can the press please use the correct words in a headline?

Headline: "Trump misleads on deportations and inflation in first ‘60 Minutes’ interview since 2020"

  6. You know what part of online life has never been enshittified? Craigslist, where founder Craig Newmark could have been an asshole billionaire, but chose a better path.

    He is my tech hero.

Here is a great profile from media news site Poynter.

  8. Poynter: When was the last time AI made you laugh? Scenes from the 2025 Summit on AI, Ethics and Journalism. “Newsrooms on a local and national level are experimenting with AI, using tools inside the newsroom to better report and display stories, and tools externally to better connect with audiences. But audiences, new research shows, are still skeptical about generative AI in news. This […]

  10. A couple of weeks ago I wrapped up a year-long fellowship as part of the Media Transformation Challenge at the Poynter Institute of Media Studies.

It was a year of incredible growth, both as a person and a professional. In the process I also formed a bond with an amazing group of people who are always at the ready to spring into action...we've got each other's backs!
