  1. #TwoSpirit #Powwows: Shared Resources To Help Celebrate #Indigiqueer Joy

Two-Spirit powwows are forming out of community needs and more continue to pop up each year.

by Nika Bartoo-Smith, Underscore Native News + ICT June 5, 2026

"Two-Spirit powwows have been a growing space in nearly the last 15 years all across Turtle Island for Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer community members and allies.

"From one of the longest-running dedicated Two-Spirit powwows in San Francisco to the second annual in Montana, Two-Spirit powwows have two common goals: to share resources and celebrate Indigiqueer joy.

" 'We want to honor and celebrate the fact that even through #genocide, even through #assimilation, Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer folks are alive and thriving, and are contributing in endless ways to their own families, to their own communities, and to the world,' said #AngelFabian, executive director of the Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits. Fabian is Ben’Zaa (Zapotecx) and Xicanx.

"As the #Trump administration has brought with it a wave of attacks on the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ people, especially trans rights, the importance of Two-Spirit powwows, societies and spaces are essential and continue to grow.

" 'We’re not going to go away, we’re not going to allow you to erase us and erase our culture, despite what the federal government and state legislatures continue to try and do,' said #DavidHerrera, Mestizo and adopted Blackfeet. Herrera is the co-founder and executive director of the Montana Two Spirit Society.

"Here’s a quick glance at the three Two-Spirit powwows that take place across the country, with two happening this summer."

  3. Ran into a fella at the gas station who was wearing a #LandBack sweatshirt, which of course I had to comment on. He had moved into the area recently, and was not aware of the local #PowWows... So I had to fill him in. Welcome to the neighborhood!

  5. Re-connected with a dear friend (who is like a younger sister to me) tonight. We will be doing genealogy research on our #NativeAmerican ancestors, sharing #NativeAmericanFoods and recipes, and re-learning and learning new dances for upcoming #Powwows! To reconnecting with #Sisters!

  9. #Arizona #TwoSpirit #Powwow empowers community amid growing #AntiTrans legislation

    Tuesday, March 4, 2025
    By Brandelyn Clark

"The Arizona Two Spirit Powwow returned to #PhoenixArizona on Saturday, February 22, to spotlight Indigenous #LGBTQ+ and two-spirit people for a day of cultural celebration and community.

"Hosted at South Mountain Community College, the event welcomed dancers, drum groups and attendees from across the region. More than just a traditional gathering, the powwow allowed two-spirit individuals to celebrate their identities and honor their place in Indigenous culture.

“'This (powwow) is a perfect example of a #SafeSpace for people to come and dance in whatever category they want to dance in, dress the way that they feel good about themselves, love who they want to love, and they are safe here. This tells the community we are here, we are here for you,' Sheila Lopez said.

"Lopez is the founder of Arizona’s first Two Spirit Powwow and the first Native chapter of #PFLAG, which bills itself as the country’s largest advocacy organization that supports LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

"President Donald Trump’s recent executive actions have left #transgender and two-spirit communities uncertain about their rights and recognition going forward.

"'It is super important right now with the administration, what they’re doing to pretty much wipe away trans people. It’s super critical right now for us to continue to show up in the community, to say we’re here, we’re not going anywhere and you can’t erase us, period,' Lopez said."

  11. In other news, I've confirmed DNA connections to my ancestors from the #WhiteCraneClan of the #Ojibwe / #Anishinaabe people. I'll be applying for #Metis membership because it does mean something to me. And I want to support the local Metis #PowWows and members of other tribes who have accepted me even before I confirmed my heritage.

  13. I stayed up late reading this article, but decided to wait until today to post it. A very good read about #PowWows, which mentions #TwoSpirits and the #NativeAmerican community!

In the powwow circle, Indigenous people are ‘dancing for our families, our Elders and our babies’

Jingle dresses, medicine wheel colours and eagle feathers are some of the ways dancers use regalia to tell stories of the land, history and people

    Excerpt:
“I like to work on the land and show hunting stories when I dance,” Mary Ann Manatch, a woodland traditional dancer from Wiikwemkoong and Rapid Lake First Nations, says. Their unique dance style also incorporates elements from men’s traditional dance. Manatch said telling stories of animals through dance, connects them to the spirit of those animals.

  15. #kitchen activities today:
It's going to be another very hot day but my apartment is still tolerable so I made a batch of pinto beans, threw the #haskap berries I picked yesterday in the freezer for a cooler day to process them, and I brined my Napa cabbage to make #kimchi this evening. This part of the summer is FULL of activities that I want to enjoy: 2 art festivals, and 2 #PowWows in the area. I want to get out on my #bicycle, and drink #beer on patios.
