  1. A few impressions of the #repair of my #Apple #PowerBook100 with lots of leaky caps. I had to open the HDD, too, to free the heads that were stuck in parking position. But now it boots again. I have to take a closer look at the LCD, though, the contrast is way too low and the potentiometer has no effect. Maybe the LA5316 is broken, or the leakage spread further than I noticed. I had to clean the side behind the caps in the picture, too. A replacement screen is no option, so I might have to abandon this project when I can't fix it. The #powersupply is beyond repair, and the battery is dead, too.

  2. i have been using it and it’s been fine

    but it buzzes now

and also cuts out if you draw more than low power

    note

THIS IS NOT THE POWER SUPPLY I FIXED BEFORE it’s different

anyway it’s rated for 10A but is dying being asked for intermittent 6.5

    and nothing is obviously hot

    so yeah

what’s it likely to be? power transistors?

  3. Continuing on the "Hangell" switching bench power supply I received a few weeks ago...

I mentioned there was some switching noise visible on the output - not a lot, but more than I'd ideally want. Today I built a filter for its outputs, with a large-ish common-mode inductor/choke rated 10 mH (accurate enough, though my meter says it drops to about half that at 100 kHz) sandwiched between a couple of 1 μF class X2 safety capacitors.

It seems to have done the trick. Under a moderate load, all the random hash has disappeared, leaving only some spikes at the switching frequency, and those are much smaller than they were before. The RMS noise value is now (barely) under 1 mV, if you believe my cheapish oscilloscope.

Like a lot of switching supplies, there's a lot of open space in the chassis, so I had room to squeeze the filter inside. I'm pretty happy with it!

Now to see if this no-brand thing works for any length of time.

  4. I like to test the #powersupply before connecting the motherboard, but this one doesn't seem to start. It starts for a split second and it stops immediately...

  6. very pleased to have got the little retention post at the blank end of the power supply (on the right front corner) pretty much exactly right the first try ^_^

the dowel in back (slightly visible here, more visible on the other side) is the other retention clip.

anyway the switch LED is powered by actual DC power out, the switch controls AC power in so the power supply is completely actually off when it's in "off" position, not just in standby or something. (It uses like 1.4 watts in standby so it's not like it's a lot, but why use any when you don't have to?)

  8. A power supply HAT for the #RaspberryPi that goes further than most, next, by offering not only respectably wide input voltage range and full 5V5A output *but* power control based on time, temperature, and input voltage.
