Contrary to popular opinion Universities aren’t yet equitable ‘woke’ organisations we are actually well off the pace and have a lot of ground to make up especially on race equity (but also gender, disability etc.). And before you right wingers come at me it is our legal duty to do this work under the Equality Act and Public Sector Equality Duty…

I couldn’t agree more on the topic of mandatory training for supervisors (and not because we’ve had that here for as long as I remember): it provides a basic level of assurance and support to new supervisors of our postgraduate researchers.
(The full report also points to the value of team supervision and the time pressure supervisors are feeling which I could also comment on at length!)

Editing a manuscript today (part of a big global survey with follow up interviews) on doctoral student experience in the pandemic and struck (not for the first time) by the longer term psychological impacts of lockdown coping strategies on students, supervisors and administrators. Yesterday I closed a fantastic alumni event for Postgraduate Researchers in our Faculty of Environment. Lots of common themes and connections (and a keynote from Director of the British Antarctic Survey) but my takeaway is that you won’t realise how transformative a PhD is until you work in a sector which doesn’t directly call on the topic of your thesis. As evidenced by my ex-student who now works for DEFRA, despite her thesis being about the identity and motivations of non-performer music students… #phd #PostgraduateResearch #GraduateSchool #DoctoralStudents #DoctoralEducation

Today has been a bit of a car crash due to lack of sleep but I got to watch myself on video presenting some digital learning materials (finally) and received not one but two thank you emails from freshly minted PhD graduates for the work our Doctoral College has done to provide a bit of additional financial support/foster a sense of community. Many of our postgraduate researchers are a long way from home and need more help than I can leverage and my colleagues can deliver, but we’ve done what we can. It’s been a tough few years but we aren’t giving up the fight. #phd #PostgraduateResearch #DoctoralEducation

And I only needed one and a half takes for my filming today (introductions for an academic integrity module).

It was Chatham House rules which means all I am going to say is that it was good to be able to express ourselves freely about our institutions, and our funders and (absent) regulators.
