  1. A quotation from Orwell

It is commonly assumed that what human beings want is to be comfortable. Well, we now have it in our power to be comfortable, as our ancestors had not. Nature may occasionally hit back with an earthquake or a cyclone, but by and large she is beaten. And yet exactly at the moment when there is, or could be, plenty of everything for everybody, nearly our whole energies have to be taken up in trying to grab territories, markets and raw materials from one another. Exactly at the moment when wealth might be so generally diffused that no government need fear serious opposition, political liberty is declared to be impossible and half the world is ruled by secret police forces. Exactly at the moment when superstition crumbles and a rational attitude towards the universe becomes feasible, the right to think one’s own thoughts is denied as never before. The fact is that human beings only started fighting one another in earnest when there was no longer anything to fight about.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English journalist, essayist, writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1946-11-29), “As I Please” column, Tribune Newspaper

  4. Dear Lovely Peeps,

THIS. This is me right now. It has been *quite* the weekend, and I am still trying to process everything, but it feels life has exploded, in a good way.

I have so much hope right now. It's been quietly growing these past few months, but now a switch has been flipped.

Don't get me wrong, it is going to be SO. MUCH. WORK. 😵 SO much blood, sweat, and especially tears. (I know this because having a wonky brain when trying to study hard concepts & you can't even *see* will do that. 🙄)

But also, so, so, SO much joy. ✨

This by #GrantSnider feels written for me right now. 🥰

  10. "Stop managing 'what is'; start creating 'what could be.'" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Here's a thought to start your Monday: the gap between "what is" and "what could be" is where the future is either won or lost.

I've long seen this trap with leadership teams in many events I've done - organizations become so efficient at managing the current reality (aka the "what is") that they lose the capacity to create "what could be." They spend their energy defending last year's logic, perfecting declining business models, and negotiating terms for a world that no longer exists. They spend all their time on what was yesterday, instead of focusing on what could be tomorrow.

And that's obviously just the wrong thing to do.

If you want to move the needle, you have to stop managing all your realities and start chasing the possibilities. This requires a fundamental rethink in how you think things:

From "What Is" to "What If": Stop looking at what mattered yesterday and focus on what will be critical tomorrow.

From Administration to Agility: Always keep in mind my Master's in Business Imagination idea - we don't need more MBAs, we need MBIs! There are too many people 'administering' things, and not enough imagining them! While others are bogged down in analysis, the winners are moving quickly, decisively.

From "Can't" to "Must": Make tomorrow real. Confronting the reality of where it will take you is the first step toward mastering. Absolutely refuse the "mutual delusion" of comfort and stagnation - and get uncomfortable, quickly!

Don't let the weight of today’s challenges blind you to tomorrow’s potential.

Always keep in mind the present is a fact, but the future is a choice.

Burn this into your mind -> Stop managing "what is"; start creating "what could be."

  15. "If you aren't pushing boundaries, you'll never discover how far it is that you can actually go!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

35 years ago this week, I quit a comfortable, well-paying job with what is now KPMG (and for a time, the particular company I was with was part of what is now Ernst Young as well - and started working on my own, in my home, developing into a career that eventually positioned me as a globally recognized futurist.

4 years later, my wife quit her comfortable job as a senior executive at Unilever to help me out.

    We were pushing boundaries.

And at any given moment, we are surrounded by those who are doing the same - pushing boundaries to find the magic. All around us, we are surrounded by those who are busy working to discover the magic that exists in pushing boundaries, to see how far it is they can actually go. And in that context, we should watch them, learn from them, get inspired by them, and chase our own actions from the actions we observe from them.

Which brings me back to **Dogan Altindag**. I mentioned him in my post yesterday about 'difficult decisions,' particularly in the context of a post he wrote about trends in the speaking industry. Our paths have crossed in the last few years, and with that, I became aware of a project he has been working on, Scurati, found over at speakercuration.com.

It's an AI speaker booking engine - give it a short brief, and in an instant, you'll get back a pretty detailed response with 3 speakers that match your requirements, plus one bonus idea.

Will the initiative take off? Will Dogan's bold bet pay off? Can he build up the awareness, momentum, and traction to put a ding in the global speaker universe?

Hard to say - that's the thing about big, bold bets. But the most important thing isn't just the tremendous amount of effort he has put into the initiative - It's the fact that he has taken the initiative.

Far too many people never chase their bold ideas. They never change their dreams. They never push the envelope. They never explore the boundaries of what's possible.

And with that, they live a life of regret for what might have been, rather than enjoying the moments of what is.

Just like my wife and I took that big, bold bet 35 years ago this week, and have never looked back.

Push your boundaries. Discover how far you can go.

    Start now.

    ----

Futurist Jim Carroll is forever grateful to his wife for supporting his big, bold bet 35 years ago.

  16. I've been confused by elevator entrance controls for a long time…

As the indicator shows where the elevator is located, I used to wonder whether you need to press the button of the direction the elevator should take to reach your floor, or press the button that indicates which way the elevator should go once you've entered it. 🙂

  17. A quotation from Jane Addams

What, after all, has maintained the human race on this old globe, despite all the calamities of nature and all the tragic failings of mankind, if not faith in new possibilities and courage to advocate them?

Peace and Bread in Time of War, ch. 7 “Personal Reactions During War” (1922)

  19. “Spend more of your time on the possibilities and the opportunities than you do on the setbacks and the roadblocks! — Futurist Jim Carroll

My post on 'mindsets' yesterday resonated with some folks - and a few asked me how we can be in a better frame of mind to adapt such mindsets, given all the negativity out there.

That got me thinking, and I came to the idea that we can best do that by focusing on opportunities and possibilities- and less time on the roadblocks that are in the way, or the setbacks we encounter along the way! With that in mind, I worked with Gemini to come up with some mindsets that fit that theme - by feeding it the several thousand blog posts that I've written since 2002. And here's what it came with - an actually kind of magical list. Then I used Gamma to build some slides for it. Also magical!

Why is the issue of a possibility-oriented mindset important? Think of this way - a mindset is the mental equivalent of keeping your eyes on the road ahead, not fixed on the rearview mirror. This doesn't mean you ignore that you hit a pothole; instead, you remain more focused on your destination and the open road that is in front of you. It is about allowing your future goals to pull you forward rather than letting past mistakes drag you back.

Having a mindset that is focused on opportunity - not barriers - is one of the most important things you can do to define your future, which was the idea behind yesterday's post.

Knowing that, you should also know that there are a few types of forward-oriented mindsets.

Read the rest of the post for more.

    **#Possibilities** **#Opportunities** **#Mindset** **#Optimism** **#Growth** **#Solutions** **#Innovation** **#Resilience** **#Focus** **#Forward**

When it comes right down to it, Futurist Jim Carroll doesn't believe that our future sucks - because we can turn it into something that want it to be!
