In late Dec, #SCOTUS issued a temporary order blocking #Trump from carrying out the #Chicago deployment because, it said, the president’s ability to federalize the #NationalGuard likely applies only in “exceptional” circumstances. The ruling has called into question any broader plans by the admin to use #federal #troops domestically to respond to #civil unrest.
The deployments have cost >$496 million, the Congressional Budget Office reported in Jan. -
The deployments — including >5,000 troops to #LosAngeles, approximately 500 into #Chicago & 200 to #Portland, #Oregon — were ordered despite the vehement opposition from state & local leaders who labeled the #Trump admin’s actions an unlawful abuse of presidential authority. All of those service members were sent home by the end of January, according to US Northern Command.

"Despite feeling conflicted, National Guardsmen who felt the mission in Lafayette Park violated their personal values and moral code could not have refused to follow the president’s order by claiming conscientious objector status. People with religious or moral objections to war may avoid enlisting as conscientious objectors, and those who experience religious or personal transformations after joining the armed forces may be honorably discharged as conscientious objectors if they request.
"But military regulations give members little ability to disobey lawful orders on the grounds of conscience."

Those discussions have been underway for weeks, & they center, in part, on a section of border in #NewMexico…. In effect, the move would turn the #BufferZone into an expansive satellite #MilitaryInstallation, potentially allowing a greater portion of the #Defense Dept’s mammoth budget to pay for #Trump’s border crackdown while creating new legal jeopardy for those caught trying to slip into the country from Mexico.
