Both are believed to be named after Zachariah B. Porter, the long-time proprietor of Porter's Hotel, which stood at the eponymously named intersection from 1831-1909.

The hotelier was known for serving fresh cuts of beef from the adjacent slaughterhouses, notably a bone-in strip steak with a large tenderloin filet.
