Apparently, I am not the only one who wants to return to an earlier version of Windows! These modified versions include all updates to the present day, which certainly saves a lot of time once they are installed.

For those who worry about security, , these two browsers are updated regularly. Both work with XP and 7. Supermium also allows you to connect to your Google account and is built off of Chrome. Serpent is updated weekly. In both cases, you must manually check on the websites for updates. Serpent is based off of Firefox, but it cannot connect to a Firefox account. It does, however, use its own servers. Both of these are also accessible with NVDA, whereas several other such browsers that work with older systems are not. You may need to search down the page for Serpent, though. Note that Icedove (like Thunderbird) is also accessible.

Here is a list of legacy programs that work with 7 and XP, though versions may differ i.e. not all may work with XP but all should work with 7. Note that some programs on the main page of this site still work on XP and 7, but since they never dropped support for those systems, there is no need for a legacy version. Among the ones I use in this category are Balabolka, Clamwin, Cook Timer, DFG and JKDefrag (only used on regular hard drives, not solid state), File Optimizer, Free Alarm Clock, HWiNFO, Jarte, KCleaner, MPCHC (Media Player Classic), MSS (Microsoft Safety Scanner), Opal (haven't tried on XP but works on 7), and Revo Uninstaller (not current/inaccessible with NVDA even on 11, must use version 1.49). Reddit for Blind (not on below site) also works on Windows 7 64-bit and Thunderbird 102 works on 7, all versions. I use it even on 11. Auto Hotkey 1 and 2 work on XP and 7.

If you use NVDA, note that, along with the latest version, those that work with XP and 7 (2017.3 and 2023.3, respectively) are available on their site. If you wish to install 7, it is important to have either talking Windows PE or a disk, usb stick (or iso if working on a virtual machine) with NVDA installed, since unlike 10 and 11, you cannot use Narrator during installation. I have never been able to install XP on my own, so unfortunately, I can't help you there.

2/5 I considered making a #PortableApps friendly collection of my favorite #FOSS programs for #Windows. However, Windows doesn't seem to be an ideal target. Newer versions don't support older, low resource computers well. It would require users to already own a non-Free OS just to run #FreeSoftware. ReactOS is Free and Windows-compatible but it isn't designed for distro spins. Wine on Linux requires more resources than a targeted Linux distro.

@sofasophia Ja, an aktiven Virenschutz usw. muss man da sehr wohl denken. Aber es gibt eine ansehnliche Anzahl von #PortableApps Also einen Blick darauf ist es allemal wert.
Eine Bekannte von mir (die sehr viel Software testet) hat sich ihre wichtigsten Anwendungen wie Mail, Office, Browser und ein paar andere für sie wichtige Sachen als PortableApps auf eine eigene Partition "installiert". Somit hat sie diese Anwendungen selbst bei einer Neuinstallation sofort und ohne Neuinstallation/Konfiguration und ohne Datenverlust wieder verfügbar.

@libreoffice Today, non-portable versions went to 24.8.0 for the newest stable and 24.2.6 for the previous stable branch (EOL november). Portable is still stuck at 24.2.3 for the "newest stable" version. Not so far in the past, it is only 4 month late, but I can find no sign of a future update. Maybe I am bad at searching this, maybe you know something helpful?

Portable versions of LibreOffice , does anyone here know what is happening with those? @libreoffice? It seems like it's been months without one to download on LibreOffice's site. The page is still there, but there are no direct links, only placeholder text.
On PortableApp , "Fresh" is 24.2.3, lagging behind the non-portable "Still" which is today 24.2.5. (Portable "Still" is 7.6.7.)
Will a up-to-date portable LO come back soon?

I also want to sync my entire #Firefox profile between computers, including one on #PortableApps for Windows, without a Mozilla sync account. I've pretty much given up, and sync only bookmarks using the @floccus plugin.
I keep about five different profiles for working with different organizations. I'd like to sync each profile independently of the others. For my personal stuff Floccus syncs to my @nextcloud server, for orgs that use Google Workspace it syncs to a file in Google Drive.

I just got a flashback to always carrying around a USB flashdrive around my neck for YEARS because it had my bitcoin on it, BUT it also had #PortableApps so I could play games and watch movies at school without downloading anything to the computers at school or the library.
