Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 08-15-26

Having a bosom pocket for a music player is wonderful. I can route the hearbuds cable into the shirt then out through the top so it doesn't get tangled and yanked on everything. And, if you see me playing with my nipple it's because... I am. I can also reach the controls easily enough by reaching inside the pocket.

Landed a longtime want. This Verit SkyStudio clumsily shoves a cassette deck into a Soundburger-esque turntable. Unfortunately this one needs the top glued, a new needle, and cassette belt replaced, but those should be doable! Seems to be working otherwise.

Maxell MXCP-P100 is a portable cassette player with modern features like Bluetooth and USB-C

The Maxell MXCP-P100 is a portable music player that mixes old-school and modern features. Like any good modern device, it has a built-in rechargeable battery and a USB Type-C port for charging. And it has both a headphone jack and support for Bluetooth 5.4, allowing you to use wired or wireless headphones or speakers.

But this isn’t an MP3 player. It’s a portable cassette player. The […]

FiiO DM13 portable CD player is coming in September for $179

Once upon a time portable cassette players like the Sony Walkman revolutionized the way people listened to music, by introducing the concept of carrying your music with you and listening privately on headphones.
These days smartphones fill that need for most users. But earlier this year a Chinese audio company called FiiO introduced the FiiO CP13 […]

ePiPod is a Raspberry Pi-powered music player with an E Ink display

Smartphones may be the portable do-everything device that fits in your pocket. But sometimes you want to leave all the distractions of a smartphone behind and use a device that does just a few things well. Some folks are turning to “dumbphones” for communication, while others are using portable Android devices with less distracting displays for […]

FiiO CP13 portable cassette player begins shipping (in small batches)

The FiiO CP13 is a portable cassette player with a simple design, big buttons, and a very basic feature set. First unveiled during CES, the cassette player does have a few modern touches including a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery and a USB-C port. But it’s very much an analog audio device: it doesn’t support MP3s or music streaming, and doesn’t […]

Loving the premise & promise of the #tangara #dap. I am slowly pulling away from Big Tech and shifting more to #FOSS, so I have happily signed up. The form factor reminded me of my 2014 #fiio X1 DAP. To scratch the itch until shipping, I have dug it out of storage and fired up for old times' sake (my lossless catalogue badly needs an update! 🙂).

It’s 2024 and FiiO is making a portable cassette player with all-analog features

A decade ago I was moderately surprised to find that companies like Sony were showing off portable music players at CES, because I figured most people had moved on to using smartphones to listen to music.
But that’s before I realized there was a whole world of portable hi-fi music products. So what’s new at CES this year? Something decidedly more […]

Tangara is an open source, iPod-inspired portable music player (crowdfunding)

If you have a smartphone then you have a portable music player in your pocket, which is probably one of the reasons why the Apple iPod and similar devices have fallen by the wayside in recent years.
But sometimes you don’t want the distractions of a modern, internet-connected device with a touchscreen color display, so there are still some […]
