  7. "Range contraction of the Yangtze finless porpoise inferred from classic Chinese poems", Zhang et al. 2025

"we examine an unusual source of information: classic Chinese poetry. From 724 ancient poems containing references to the Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis), we infer that the range of this subspecies has contracted by at least 65% over the past 1400 years."

Not a whale, but want to use World Whale Day as an opportunity to raise awareness of the vaquita porpoise. These critically endangered beauties need our help! Humans are driving their extinction!

Porpoises are withstanding in the #NorthSea, where there were observed another four species in the danish parts of North Sea and #Skagerrak: #MinkeWhale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), #WhiteBeakedDolphin (Lagenorhynchus albirostris), #AtlanticWhiteSidedDolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus) and #AtlanticBottlenoseDolphin (Tursiops truncatus). 10. This came up in my FB memories and I thought I'd share it here also.

The video is from several years ago, when I was out commercial salmon fishing with my partner.

I think I like seeing porpoises more than whales. They are so playful, weaving under and around the boat in a choreographed ballet.

"As huge offshore #WindFarms spread across Europe's seas, efforts grow to buffer the impact on #wildlife... The #BubbleCurtain was designed around the #porpoise's specific needs and traits, lowering #WindFarm construction noise to a threshold deemed safe for the species, based on scientific research. Its proven muffling effect may also benefit other marine #mammals such as #seals"

  14. Things haven’t looked good for the #vaquita for decades, but the last few years have brought the species to the #BrinkOfExtinction . #Endemic & #exclusive to the upper #GulfOfCalifornia - the pint-size #porpoise has become an unfortunate bycatch of fishing operations in the area, primarily the illegal catching of #totoaba

Wonderful news! Increase of 237 porpoises in 5 years. Let’s hope the populations of the other species of #endangered #RiverPorpoises does the same.

"Incredible results like these for the Yangtze finless #porpoise remind us that there is still hope for the world's other five remaining species of river dolphins – all of which are threatened with #extinction."
