I just remembered this jewel: Santi Careta (ukulele) and Alba Careta (voice) perform a selection of numbers from Gershwin's Porgy & Bess.
Glorious.

Of course, we’re starting with “Summertime” (https://youtu.be/eUzzaJl4KJM?is=GF-R_DkxRxcVxq1D) from the 1935 opera “ Porgy and Bess”. It was composed by George Gershwin and the lyrics are from DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. This jazz-inspired lullaby is first sung by the devout yet tragic wife & mother Clara to her child, and is reprised throughout the opera. It’s considered to be one of the most covered songs in the world with over 25,000 different versions!

Just the lyrics here, but look for her version on line via Ed Sullivan Show
I loves you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me and drive me mad
If you can keep me, I wanna stay here
With you forever and I'll be glad
Yes I loves you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me with his hot hands
If you can keep me I wants to stay here
With you forever, I've got my man
I loves you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me and drive me mad
If you can keep me, I wanna stay here
With you forever, I've got my man
Someday I know he's coming to call me
He's going to handle me and hold me
So, it's going to be like dying, Porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes I know, I'll have to go
I loves you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Honey, don't let him handle me and drive me mad
If you can keep me, I wanna stay here
With you forever, I've got my man

For the curious: Yes, Robert McFerrin Sr. is the father of popular singer-songwriter and musicologist Bobby McFerrin!

While Sammy Davis Jr. jumped at the chance to play Sportin’ Life. Leading man Sidney Poitier had to be convinced by friends and management to take the role. Even then, for all of his talents singing wasn’t one of them so he’s dubbed by Robert McFerrin Sr., the first black man to sign a contract with the New York Metropolitan Opera.

Once the rights were secured in the late 1950s, casting proved to be difficult due to the fact tha the subject matter could be interpreted as perpetuating negative stereotypes of Black Americans.

Despite success on stage, “Porgy and Bess” (1959) was mired in production issues from its inception from one early producer trying secure film rights w/an all white/white passing cast (Fred Astaire, Al Jolson and Rita Hayworth, etc.) in blackface which understandably angered the writers

“Porgy and Bess” (1959) is based on the 1935 opera of the same name by George Gershwin, DuBose Heyward & Ira Gershwin, which in turn based on Heyward's 1925 novel “Porgy” & the 1927 non-musical stage play co-written w/his wife Dorothy

Delightful.

As well as the traditional instruments of the orchestra, the score for Porgy and Bess calls for African Drums, a wood block, a cowbell, sandpaper, a train whistle and a banjo.
Ten things you might not know about Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.

One of these mornings
You’re going to rise up singing
Then you’ll spread your wings
And you’ll take to the sky
But till that morning
There’s a’nothing can harm you

Spannend ohne Ende.

After hearing Cab Calloway’s “it Ain’t Necessarily So” (https://youtu.be/oyHMrgOhyAU) you never expect to hear a version just as great but this *IS* Ella Fitzgerald (https://youtu.be/XApryV3jF0s) after all

Morning, the rain has broken, hot coffee to hand & #NowPlaying #SketchesOfSpain for the second time in a row. I love #MilesDavis with #GilEvans. Between this and #PorgyandBess, this wins out. #Saeta is quite unlike anything else I can bring to mind - that soulful horn, with the weird drone deep in the background then breaking into a march… Evocative stuff.
This is the #MobileFidelity 33, the best version I’ve heard by a country mile.
