My favorite pop-up mechanisms are those that clearly explain principles of type design that are difficult to show in static images: the asymmetry of S and O; the optical correction devices of overshoot and horizontal/vertical stroke weights; the concept of variable axes. Por fin he escrito en el blog sobre cómo ha sido hacer pop-ups para el tráiler de The Plucky Squire junto a @paperjulia . Hay trasfondo, fotitos tras las escenas y algunos vídeos inéditos.

Hoy he arreglado este pop-up que apareció vaciando un desván. Publicado en Barcelona en 1968, tiene solo cuatro escenas. Todas ellas están cortadas y "sacadas" de una misma tira continua de papel grueso, doblada en acordeón. Era (y es) una manera de reducir al mínimo el manipulado necesario para producir el libro y, con ello, su coste final.
Hemos encontrado otros dos libros, del 67 y del 64. Cuando los arregle, los enseño también.

Tras casi dos años de desarrollo, lanzamos kickstarter para imprimir un libro pop-up chulísimo sobre la Copa América. Lo escribe Santi Serrat, que es una eminencia del mundo naval, y yo le hago la ingeniería del papel.
Está feo decirlo, pero nos ha quedado genial. Durante las tres semanas que nos quedan contaré cositas del desarrollo.

Who doesn't love a good pop-up book; and–1 month from #ALIENDay, why has Ridley Scott's movie never had one?
The used book market doesn't often see pop-ups in working condition. This one is 100% functional with a small, unintended fold of the frontal lobe. In other words, it has minor brain damage.

I'm Yeray, a paper engineer and book designer based in Spain. I turn existing books into pop-ups and build original designs for books, greeting cards, packaging and advertising.
So far I've worked for clients in Europe, the UK, the US, India and China but I hope to keep that list expanding.
I briefly mentioned it in a metafilter thread, but "The Brief History of Pop-Up Books" from Domestika is very interesting, with a number of cool photos. It really is a *brief* history, but rabbits have their holes, and the image below, for example, led me to another source (McGill, https://news.library.mcgill.ca/a-mirror-into-the-microcosm-digitizing-johann-remmelins-1619-flap-anatomy-catoptrum-microcosmicum), where I learned, among other things, that "what is particularly interesting about the 1619 [Johann Remmelin] printing is not only the extensiveness of the anatomical flaps, but also the inclusion of the devil covering the female genitalia." Unlike rabbits, no holes there, apparently. 😄
