  1. "Today, however, #populists often lose #elections narrowly and have every reason to contest the outcome: they see themselves as representing half the population—whom they often frame as “the real people”—in highly #polarized #countries." www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/l...

  2. What a grubby, self-serving, and deliberately divisive propagandist Barnaby Joyce is. His anti-#ClimateAction agenda ultimately serves short-term gain for a select few, at the expense of the most-of-us, future generations, and planetary #ecology.
Barnaby Joyce reminds of me of a used car salesman. He reassures the gullable, but ultimately sells lemons. Like all deceptive #populists he would have you believe that accelerating fossil-fuel use will deliver #EnergySecurity. It won't, #ClimateDenial aside. Joyce is a dangerous fool, cast in the same mould as that other orange-tinged dangerous fool. Seems, orange, means, as in nature - beware - toxic. #AusPol

  4. #Labor should contest the #FarrerByElection, and it would be gutless not to do so. It shouldn't only be about winning, and anything that draws away from the #ClimateDenying #populists is a demonstration of stance. The #Greens running in #Farrer gives voters a real choice. Anyone who knows how preferential voting works should have no objection. #ABCNews24

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski took a sarcastic tone on X: "Another day goes by without our nationalists defending Venezuela’s national sovereignty. Does it only apply to the European Union, which poses no threat?""

  14. The #war of aggression against #Ukraine, the trade dispute with #Trump, the deaths in #Gaza, and the #populists at home …

No matter the topic - our own military defense capabilities, negotiating on equal terms, standing up for human dignity, providing humanitarian aid, or simply implementing sanctions by majority decision: #Europe and the #EU are currently demonstrating their inability to act on a daily basis.

  17. Today is a good day. Our #government has fallen, finally. The coalition of #fascists and #populists couldn't agree on even the colour of shite, and #Wilders has finally thrown in the towel.

They've achieved absolutely nothing in the last year, nothing but infighting, complaining about others and countless Twitter-fitties.

So, new #elections. Let's hope the simpletons who voted for the fascist #PVV party of Geert Wilders have finally seen that he's full of shit, and his promises are less than cheap.

  18. There hasn't been a left government in The Netherlands for over 20 years. #Populists are framing #left as "left #elite", scaring people who are afraid of #change (adressing #climatechange, fairer distibution of wealth). #Rightextremists are winning because of lies and hatred.

  19. Research into how #disinformation affects democracy has never been more important. But #autocrats and #populists discredit any findings that challenge their worldview. In my latest article on ECPR's The Loop I describe how #Trump is changing the rules of communication, and manipulating public discourse

  20. Don't blame the #Nazi's for the #Holocaust, so young people today won't see the parallels with present day #populists and #fascist politicians coming into power. So they don't recognise present day etnic cleansing as similar, so they won't protest #genocides in the future, or hold those responisble accountable.

  21. Habeck is a fool for joining former #twitter again. All still using twitter are enabling #EvilElon, his algorithms favoring his and other #rightwing tweets and Russian #botnets.
There is no political discussion on twitter, but disinformation and propaganda and every serious politician is just legitimizing the #populists.
From #Musk there is nothing else to be expected, he is a #bully.

  22. Here’s proof of how desperate #donaldtrump is

#ElonMusk plans to give away $1m (£766,000) a day to a registered voter in the key swing state of Pennsylvania until the US presidential election in November

    That’s #electioninterference

#Populists around the world know their time is up. Unable to accept #reality & #democracy - their #selfishness & lust for #power is dwarfed by their sheer #vanity

  23. Right-leaning #populists begin with business-friendly measures such as tax cuts and deregulation,
initially sending growth and markets higher.

What changes over time to produce results that end up harming the economy and corporations?

The first challenge is that once sustained for more than a few years, 🔸these growth-pumping policies invariably produce inflation, credit risk, and currency volatility.

The greater danger comes in how leaders react once this market performance unravels.
Instead of returning to budget discipline or ending the flow of easy money, they often resort to measures associated with populists of the left,
such as challenging central bank independence, imposing exchange controls, or restricting free trade.

When those backfire, the third difficulty begins:

They attempt to mask their failures by sabotaging the agencies producing independent data so that they can claim their own version of “the facts.”

Some business leaders understand these trends
    — a June 2024 analysis found that no Fortune 100 CEO had personally donated to the Trump 2024 campaign, for example.

But many fail to anticipate this reversal because they rely on heuristics such as “left” or “right.”

But thinking of populists as left or right is a misunderstanding.

    Populists care little about ideology
    — what they want is power.

To get it, they build their popularity by polarizing populations.

Fanning division between “us” and “them” creates intense loyalty from a base of supporters, who are easily convinced that things that stand in the leaders’ way
    — including independent institutions and laws
    — are illegitimate obstacles to the will of the majority.

With the support of this base, populists centralize and personalize that power.

They gain control over once-independent institutions that could serve as checks, such as central banks and courts.

They undermine others that could contradict their claims, like independent statistical bodies.

These activities take time and are often just getting underway in early years.

But when populists are in power for a while, or return to power at a later date,
this increased polarization and a weakened rule of law provide few institutional constraints on their decision making.

As the economies of these countries start exhibiting volatility, stock market shocks, inflation, and heightened credit risk, the normal institutions that would right the ship are unable to do their jobs.

(Witness, for example, Erdogan’s sidelining of the Central Bank in Turkey,
and calls to limit or even eliminate the role of the U.S. Federal Reserve in a Project 2025 policy planning document created by conservative groups to guide a second Trump administration.)

Disempowered, once-vital agencies can at best issue warnings.

But nay-sayers are not popular among populist leaders.

Instead of changing course, these leaders tend to alter or simply refuse to report accuratestatistics
    — leaving businesses and investors flying in the dark leading economies to fly in the dark
