Xibalba
Xibalba roughly translates to “place of fright.”
This is the K’iche’ (A Mayan language of the K’iche’ people of the central highlands of Guatemala & Mexico) named the Underworld in a Maya(n) mythology. The underworld is known as Mitnal in Yucatec, a Mayan language spoken in the Yucatan Peninsula.
In the 16th century, Verapaz, the entrance to Xibalba, was traditionally held to be a cave in the area of Cabon, Guatemala. Cave systems in nearby Belize have also been referred to as the entrance to Xibalba. In some Mayan areas, the Milky Way is viewed as the road to Xibalba.
Xibalba is described in the Popol Vuh (A text recounting the mythology & history of the K’iche’ people of Guatemala. This is 1 of the Maya peoples who also inhabit Mexican states) as a court below the surface of the earth associated with death & with 12 gods, or powerful rulers, known as the Lords of Xibalba.
The 1st among the Mayan death gods ruling Xibalba were: Hun-Came (“One Death”) & Vucub-Came (“Seven Death”). Though Hun-Came is the elder of the 2.
The remaining 10 Lords are often referred to as demons & are given commission & domain over diverse forms of human suffering: to cause sickness, starvation, fear, destitution, pain, & ultimately death.
These Lords work in pairs: Xiquiripat (“Flying Scab”) & Cuchumaquix (“Gathered Blood”), who sickens people’s blood. Ahalpuh (“Pus Demon”) & Ahalgana (“Jaundice Demon”), who cause people’s bodies to swell up. Chamiabac (“Bone Staff”) & Ahalttcob (“Stabbing Demon”), who hide in the unswept areas of people’s homes & stab them to death. Xic (“Wing”) & Patan (“Pack strap”), who cause people to die coughing up blood while out walking on a road.
The remaining residents of Xibalba are thought to have fallen under the dominion of 1 of these Lords, going about the face of the Earth to carry out their listed duties.
Xibalba was a large palace, & several individual structures located within Xibalba are described or mentioned in the Popol Vuh. Chief among these was the council place of the Lords, the 5 or 6 houses that served as the 1st tests of Xibalba, & the Xibalba ball court. Also mentioned are the homes of the Lords, gardens, & other structures, indicating that Xibalba was at least a great city.
Xibalba seems to be rife with tests, trials, & traps for anyone who comes into the city. Even the roads to Xibalba were filled with obstacles: 1st, a river filled with scorpions, a river filled with blood, & then a river filled with pus.
Beyond these was a crossroads where travellers had to choose from among 4 roads that spoke in an attempt to confuse & beguile. Upon passing these obstacles, 1 would come upon the Xibalba council place where it was expected visitors would greet the seated Lords.
Realistic mannequins were seated near the Lords to confuse & humiliate people who greeted them, & the confused would then be invited to sit up on a bench, which was actually a hot cooking surface. The Lords of Xibalba would entertain themselves by humiliating people in this fashion before sending them into 1 of Xibalba’s deadly tests.
The city was home to at least 6 deadly houses filled with trials for visitors. The 1st was the Dark House, a house that was completely dark inside. The 2nd was the Rattling House/Cold House, full of bone-chilling cold & rattling hail. The 3rd was the Jaguar House, filled with hungry jaguars. Tht 4th was the Bat House, filled with dangerous shrieking bats. The 5th was the Razor House, filled with blades & razors that moved about of their own accord. In another part of the Popol Vuh, a 6th test, the Hot House, was filled with fires & heat, is identified. The purpose of these trials/tests was to either kill or humiliate people placed into them if they couldn’t outwit the test.
Xibalba was home of a famous ballcourt in which the heroes of the Popol Vuh succumbed to the trickery of the demons in the form of a deadly, bladed ball, as well as the site in which the Mayan Hero Twins outwitted the gods & brought about their downfall.
According to the Popol Vuh, the residents of Xibalba at 1 point enjoyed the worship of the people on the surface of the Earth who offered human sacrifice to the gods of death.
Over the span of time covered in the Popol Vuh, the gods of Xibalba are tricked & finally humiliated into accepting lesser offerings from above by the Maya Twins, who got superpowers after they were burnt & their ashes thrown into a magical river.
The role of Xibalba & its inhabitants after their great defeat at the hands of the Hero Twins is unclear. Although it seems to have continued its existence a dark place of the underworld long after.

Spero che vi piaccia quanto è piaciuto a me comporlo.

Christianity was formally established in Guatemala in 1534 under Bishop Francisco Marroquín, who sent out priests with portable altars to the various highland Maya towns and
villages in an effort to baptize the indigenous population and to destroy any remnants of “idolatry” that they might find. Ancient temples, as well as the carved and painted images which they contained, were systematically destroyed, their stones used to build Christian churches. Missionaries singled out hieroglyphic codices for destruction in an effort to protect
the Indians from their former religious beliefs. Alonso de Zorita wrote that in 1540 he saw numerous such books in the Guatemalan highlands which “recorded their history for more
than eight hundred years back, and which were interpreted for me by very ancient Indians”
(Zorita 1963, 271-2).
Fr. Bartolomé de las Casas lamented that when found, such books were
destroyed:
These books were seen by our clergy, and even I saw part of those which were burned by the monks, apparently because they thought [they] might harm the Indians in matters
concerning religion, since at that time they were at the beginning of their conversion. (Las Casas 1958, 346)

The K'ux of the Biscuit
Was Frank Zappa aware that, in the Popol Vuh, K'ux refers to "the heart as the source of the “vital spirit” of a thing, or that which gives it life"?
For the ancient Aztecs the highest form of sacred communication was poetry, what they called xochicuicatl (“flower-song”). These were delicately beautiful hymns meant to be recited orally, often to musical accompaniment.
From within the heavens they come,
The beautiful flowers, the beautiful songs.
Our longing spoils them,
Our inventiveness makes them lose their fragrance.
(León-Portilla 1980, 257)
Such songs exist only at the moment of their performance, their sound hanging briefly in the air, then fading to silence. It is only when they are spoken that they reveal their divine origin, transforming the poet into a messenger of deity:
Now I am going to forge songs,
Make a stem flowering with songs,
Oh my friends!
God has sent me as a messenger.
I am transformed into a poem.
(León-Portilla 1969, 80)
Most poems were learned by heart and were lost forever if forgotten. Thus Aztec poetry had no permanent reality of its own, no more than a dream.

"Quichés in that area had, of course, seen documents and books like the Bible written in
Spanish but had little conception at that time that it was possible to use phonetic letters to
record their own language. This is a great tragedy, because until about five hundred years
ago the Maya were the most literate people in the Americas, preserving their history and
culture with a sophisticated hieroglyphic script in hundreds of folded screen books. The
Spanish conquest in the early sixteenth century was a devastating blow to Maya literacy in
Mexico and Guatemala. Christian missionaries burned great numbers of hieroglyphic texts in
an attempt to eradicate indigenous religious practices. Native scribes were singled out for
persecution to such an extent that within one hundred years, the art of hieroglyphic writing
had virtually disappeared from among the Maya people."

"With the ascent of Hunahpu and Xbalanque the Popol Vuh returns to the problem the gods confronted at the beginning: the making of beings who will walk, work, talk, and pray in an articulate manner. The account of their fourth and final attempt at a solution is a flashback, since it takes us to a time when the sun had not yet appeared. As we have already seen, the gods failed when they tried using mud and then wood as the materials for the human body, but now they get news of a mountain filled with yellow corn and white corn, discovered by the fox, coyote, parrot, and crow (at the beginning of Part Four). Xmucane grinds the corn from this mountain very finely, and the flour, mixed with the water she rinses her hands with, provides the substance for human flesh, just as the ground bone thrown in the river by the Xibalbans becomes the substance for the rebirth of her grandsons. The first people to be modeled from the corn dough are four men named Jaguar Quitze, Jaguar Night, Mahucutah, and True Jaguar. They are the first four heads of Quiche patrilineages; as in the case of the men who occupy such positions today, they are called "mother-fathers," since in ritual matters they serve as symbolic androgynous parents to everyone in their respective lineages.
This time the beings shaped by the gods are everything they hoped for and more: not only do the first four men pray to their makers, but they have perfect vision and therefore perfect knowledge. The gods are alarmed that beings who were merely manufactured by them should have divine powers, so they decide, after their usual dialogue, to put a fog on human eyes."
(Popol Vuh)
1) I find it very interesting that the term used here is not "father" or "mother", but one which combines both.
2) Also very interesting that the ability to "clearly see" is seen as a divine power, as it is the case in Leibniz in his Monadology
3) The passage obviously makes one think of the Tree of Knowledge. The gods do not want their Creatures to clearly see and understand.
#networklayers #popolvuh
When Hunahpu and Xbalanque begin playing ball at the Great Abyss they disturb the lords of Xibalba, just like their father and uncle before them. Once again the lords send a summons, but this time the messengers go to Xmucane, telling her that the twins must present themselves in seven days. She sends a louse to relay the message to her grandsons, but the louse is swallowed by a toad, the toad by a snake, and the snake by a falcon. The falcon arrives over the ball court and the twins shoot him in the eye. They cure his eye with gum from their ball, which is why the laughing falcon now has a black patch around the eye. The falcon vomits the snake, who vomits the toad, who still has the louse in his mouth, and the louse recites the message, quoting what Xmucane told him when she quoted what the owls told her when they quoted what the lords of Xibalba told them to say.
(This passage of the Popol Vuh made me think of network protocols and their packets being embedded in payloads of other packets.)

I just found this capsule review I wrote for a radio station copy of a Popol Vuh record. This was a very long time ago. It's not a particularly insightful review, but I laughed out loud while re-reading it, and that's as good a reason as I need to share it here tonight. This was written for an (internal) audience of radio station staff members, which is neither an excuse nor a boast. Just an additional data point.
Popol Vuh - “Sei Still, Wisse ICH BIN" LP
As is the case with Italian horror movie soundtracks, obscure Latvian politics, and the intricacies of craft beer, I don’t really know squat about Popol Vuh. I can tell you that they are a highly influential German band who are often mentioned in the same breath as Krautrock icons like Can and Faust (whom I do know/like/can speak of with some degree of confidence), but Popol Vuh has always been a more difficult climb for me. Maybe it’s the neo-classical influence or perhaps it's just the sheer expanse of their catalog that I find intimidating. But if there’s one doorway into their music that I’m able to enter through, it’s their soundtrack for the Werner Herzog film Fitzcarraldo, which I will happily geek out over any day of the week.
In the movie, the title character (played by Klaus Kinski) chases a mad ambition to construct an opera house in the middle of the jungle and ends up pushing a huge boat over a mountain. Some people like to see deep metaphor in this singularly insane act, but I prefer the theory stating that the movie isn't really making any grand comment on the triumph of willpower, or the burning passion of one man's desire, but is in fact just a three hour story about a guy who pushes a huge boat over a mountain. (They really did it during the shooting of the film, so there’s an argument to be made that Fitzcarraldo is really just Herzog's documentary about himself.)
ANYWAY, Popul Vuh’s music, and in particular, the song “Garten der Gemeinschaft” (1:3 on this record) is used to spectacular and lasting effect in the movie, so for better or worse, that’s the hill this review is built to die on. I can’t say for certain that this is the best Popol Vuh record for newcomers, but I find the music here unique, creepy, and weirdly beautiful all at the same time. Although often identified as a Krautrock band, this record offers little that could be readily agreed upon as being “rock” of any sort. It’s more like primitive orchestral music with vocal incantations from some alien religion. Either that or seriously tripping balls at the Renaissance Faire.
Just some drone footage from Chichen Itza, Mexico.
