FRIED CHICKEN BOOM: Six major chicken chain openings in 18 months — and now Wingers picks Swansea for its biggest ever UK restaurant
Wingers — the fast-growing American-style buttermilk chicken brand — has confirmed its first ever Welsh location will open at Parc Fforestfach in Swansea this summer, and that the Swansea unit will be the company’s largest restaurant in the UK.
The arrival is the latest chapter in what has become a remarkable run of fried chicken openings in and around Swansea — a sector that has expanded faster than almost any other part of the local hospitality scene over the past 18 months.
Wingers — biggest in the UK, first in Wales
The new Wingers restaurant will occupy a 2,040 sq ft unit at Parc Fforestfach on a 15-year lease, with the company investing more than £300,000 in the fit-out and creating up to 20 local jobs.
Anthony Round, Franchise Development at Wingers, said the company was “very excited” to be opening at the park, describing the location as a perfect fit.
An opening date and promotional launch event are still to be announced.
Nando’s confirmed at last
Alongside Wingers, the long-anticipated Parc Fforestfach Nando’s has now been confirmed for a summer opening too. Nando’s was first reported by Swansea Bay News to be eyeing the site in October last year, when planning documents revealed the chain was lined up to take over the existing Card Factory unit.
The new Nando’s will occupy a 3,945 sq ft restaurant unit, with earlier planning documents suggesting around 40 jobs would be created.
The chain has been steadily expanding its south-west Wales footprint. Earlier this month, the Llanelli branch was ranked the second-best Nando’s in Wales based on Tripadvisor reviews.
Six chicken arrivals in 18 months
The Wingers and Nando’s confirmations cap an extraordinary run of fried chicken brand expansions across south-west Wales.
The boom began on Wind Street in February 2025 with American wing specialist Wingstop, which confirmed its Swansea opening earlier that year and launched on what is the city’s most concentrated nightlife strip.
Four months later, Wind Street picked up a second chicken chain — American fast-casual brand Slim Chickens opened on 26 June 2025, bringing southern-fried tenders to what the brand itself described as the city’s favourite party street.
Then came the largest single Swansea opening of all. American chicken giant Popeyes launched on Oxford Street on 3 October 2025 in the former Topshop building, drawing 18-hour overnight queues on opening day — one of the most extraordinary opening day responses to any food retailer in the city in living memory.
The Popeyes craze then spread to Llanelli, where the chain took over the former Pizza Hut at Parc Trostre following that brand’s collapse into administration — and opened to 14-hour overnight queues of its own, confirming this wasn’t simply a Swansea phenomenon.
That makes six major fried chicken arrivals or expansions in 18 months: Wingstop (Wind Street, February 2025), Slim Chickens (Wind Street, June 2025), Popeyes (Oxford Street, October 2025), Popeyes (Llanelli Parc Trostre), Nando’s (Parc Fforestfach, summer 2026), and Wingers (Parc Fforestfach, summer 2026).

There’s a geography to the boom worth noting. Three of the city centre arrivals — Wingstop, Slim Chickens and Popeyes — sit within a few hundred metres of each other on or around Wind Street and Oxford Street, the heart of Swansea’s evening economy.
The Parc Fforestfach openings serve a different audience: car-borne family trade rather than late-night party crowd, lunch and dinner rather than post-pub.
The pattern reflects a wider trend confirmed by Swansea BID at the end of 2025: new business openings outpaced closures in Swansea city centre over the year, with the city centre reporting renewed business confidence.
Wider Parc Fforestfach line-up
The Wingers and Nando’s arrivals add to a steadily growing mix of leisure, food and retail operators at the retail park. In March, planning permission was sought for a 24-hour Anytime Fitness gym at the site, taking over the large unit previously occupied by Homesense and, before that, Borders.
Children’s indoor activity centre Zuno Play and pet retailer Jollyes are also among the recent or pending additions to the park’s line-up.

Fried chicken frenzy as Popeyes lands in Llanelli with 14‑hour queue
Llanelli was buzzing long before sunrise on Saturday as Popeyes threw open its doors at Parc Trostre, drawing one of the longest fast‑food queues the town has ever seen. The US fried chicken chain officially opened at 11am — but the first customers had already been waiting for 14 hours.
Among them was Ernie, who turned up at 9pm on Friday armed with determination and an appetite.
“I arrived at 9pm,” he said. “I heard about the giveaways and was really excited to try Popeyes.”
He wasn’t alone for long. Henry, who spotted the opening on Instagram, joined the queue soon after.
“I saw Popeyes in America, so I thought I’d come down to see what it was all about,” he said. “I joined Ernie and we made friends in the queue.”
By the time the shutters lifted, the line stretched across Parc Trostre Retail Park, with fans shrugging off the rain for a taste of the chain’s famous Louisiana‑style chicken.

Inside, customers were greeted with the brand’s signature menu: the cult‑favourite Chicken Sandwich, hot wings, tenders and wraps, all made with fresh chicken marinated for 12 hours in Popeyes’ Louisiana seasoning before being hand‑breaded for what the chain calls its “shatter‑crunch”.
Tom Crowley, Popeyes UK Chief Executive Officer, said the Llanelli launch showed once again how strong the appetite is for the brand in Wales.
“We’re really pleased to have opened our fifth restaurant in Wales,” he said. “Once again, fans in Wales have shown us how much love there is for Popeyes, and the Llanelli opening marks another exciting step in our growth journey. As always, the energy was amazing, and it’s a great feeling to bring the spirit of New Orleans to Llanelli.”
The opening follows recent launches in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea, with the chain rapidly expanding across the UK.
For Ernie and Henry — and the hundreds who queued behind them — the wait was all part of the fun.
“It was worth it,” Henry said. “And we made friends along the way.”

Popeyes confirms Llanelli opening date – with free chicken for the first 100 customers
The US fried chicken brand announced the opening date today, confirming the new restaurant will launch at 11am at Parc Trostre Retail Park. Popeyes said the Llanelli site will be its fifth Welsh restaurant following openings in Swansea, Cardiff and Newport.
To mark what the company describes as its “first Welsh opening of 2026”, Popeyes says it will offer a series of giveaways on launch day. According to the chain, the first three people in the queue will receive free Deluxe Chicken Sandwiches for a year. The first 50 customers will receive branded merchandise, and the first 100 will be given a free Deluxe Chicken Sandwich.
Popeyes said the queue will officially open at 9am. The company pointed to its Swansea launch last autumn, where it claims some customers queued for 18 hours to be among the first through the door.
The chain says the Llanelli menu will include its signature Chicken Sandwich, wraps, hot wings and tenders, all made with fresh chicken marinated for 12 hours in its Louisiana seasoning blend and hand‑breaded for what it calls its “shatter‑crunch”. Sides will include Mac & Cheese, gravy and smoky beans.
Popeyes UK Chief Executive Officer Tom Crowley said:
“The excitement from Welsh fans never disappoints. Last autumn, our Swansea opening saw 18‑hour queues, following other successful launches in Cardiff and Newport. Opening our fifth restaurant in Wales is another key step in our growth journey, and we’re looking forward to welcoming Llanelli diners on the 7th February.”
The company says the new restaurant will seat 74 people and create 81 jobs locally. It will open in Unit 15 at Parc Trostre, replacing the former Pizza Hut site.
The Llanelli launch follows months of anticipation after Swansea Bay News first reported the chain’s plans for the town and its wider South Wales expansion.
Popeyes will hold a preview evening on 6 February, with the company inviting media and local guests to sample the menu ahead of opening day.

Byl jsem ve středu dát druhou šanci #Popeyes, tentokrát v mém městě. Přišel jsem k večeru, fronta i venku, ale během asi minuty jsem se stejně dostal dovnitř. V samoobslužném kiosku jsem nenašel Voodoo Chicken Sandwich, tak jsem si vybral jako náhradu Coleslaw Chicken Sandwich s hranolkama a bezedným kelímkem. To čekání bylo na fast food docela pekelné, objednávky jsem se dostal až po půl hodině a za to čekání jsem dostal kompenzaci ve formě Shaku. Co se týče žrádla, tentokrát můžu říct, že jsem si docela i pochutnal, hranolky rozhodně lepší než u Meka. Ten milkshake byl brutální, celkem mě dorazil, měl jsem trochu problém se potom vůbec zvednout.
Docela bych byl rád, kdyby u nás KFC (proklatě zkažené kuře) odtáhlo do prdele a místo toho byl Popeyes.
Ale stejně se nemůžu dočkat, až ochutnám ten vyhlášený smažák od Fousáče v Karlíně.

Minulý týden stihl v Plzni otevřít #Popeyes, jenže jak to vypadá, už stihl i zavřít, nebo má divnou otvíračku - má být otevřen zase až ve středu (zítra). V rozvozové aplikaci se aktuálně nedá objednat. Nevím proč, ale chtěl jsem tomu dát ještě šanci, i když v Praze mě moc nenadchl. Možná si potřebuju říct, že je to shit a že už tam nikdy nevlezu.
V Praze konečně otevřeli #FiveGuys, to je asi zatím nejlepší fast food, který jsem kdy žral. Zatím jsem to ochutnal akorát v Rotterdamu. Překvapivě v Amsterdamu stále nemají žádnou pobočku, což nechápu. Je teda fakt, že cenově je to na fast food docela síla, 275 Kč za samotný burger a 125 Kč za malé hranolky (ale množství je solidní, jejich velké mají přes půl kila).

Popeyes Hot Ones Last Dab Ranch
Really pleased to see some restaurants starting to roll the dice with spicy menu items that are actually spicy. Granted, this dipping sauce is almost certainly not as hot as what guests eat on the Hot Ones show, but it still packs a pretty good punch.
