Dear brothers and sisters, Saint Teresa of Jesus is a true teacher of Christian life for the faithful of every time. In our society, which all too often lacks spiritual values, St. Teresa teaches us to be unflagging witnesses of God, of his presence and of his action. She teaches us truly to feel this thirst for God that exists in the depths of our hearts, this desire to see God, to seek God, to be in conversation with him and to be his friends.
This is the friendship we all need that we must seek anew, day after day. Through a happy coincidence, this Sunday falls on 16 July, the day when the liturgy commemorates Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The slopes of Carmel, a high ridge that runs down the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea at the altitude of Galilee, are dotted with numerous natural caves, beloved by hermits.
The most famous of these men of God was the great Prophet Elijah, who in the ninth century before Christ strenuously defended the purity of faith in the one true God from contamination by idolatrous cults. Inspired by the figure of Elijah, the contemplative order of Carmelites arose. It is a religious family that counts among its members great saints such as Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (in the world: Edith Stein).
The Carmelites have spread among the Christian people devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding her up as a model of prayer, contemplation and dedication to God.
Indeed, Mary was the first, in a way that can never be equaled, to believe and experience that Jesus, the Incarnate Word, is the summit, the peak of man’s encounter with God. By fully accepting the Word, she “was blessedly brought to the holy Mountain” (cf. Opening Prayer of the Memorial), and lives forever with the Lord in body and soul.
Today, I would like to entrust to the Queen of Mount Carmel all contemplative life communities scattered throughout the world, especially those of the Carmelite Order, among which I recall the Monastery of Quart, not far from here, that I have had the opportunity to visit in these days. May Mary help every Christian to find God in the silence of prayer.

St Teresa proposes a profound harmony with the great biblical figures and eager listening to the word of God. She feels above all closely in tune with the Bride in the Song of Songs and with the Apostle Paul, as well as with Christ in the Passion and with Jesus in the Eucharist. The Saint then stresses how essential prayer is.
Praying, she says, “means being on terms of friendship with God frequently conversing in secret with him who, we know, loves us” (Life 8, 5). St Teresa’s idea coincides with Thomas Aquinas’ definition of theological charity as “amicitia quaedam hominis ad Deum”, a type of human friendship with God, who offered humanity his friendship first; it is from God that the initiative comes (cf. Summa Theologiae II-II, 23, 1).
Prayer is life and develops gradually, in pace with the growth of Christian life: it begins with vocal prayer, passes through interiorization by means of meditation and recollection, until it attains the union of love with Christ and with the Holy Trinity. Obviously, in the development of prayer, climbing to the highest steps does not mean abandoning the previous type of prayer. Rather, it is a gradual deepening of the relationship with God that envelops the whole of life.
Rather than a pedagogy, Teresa’s is a true “mystagogy” of prayer: she teaches those who read her works how to pray by praying with them. Indeed, she often interrupts her account or exposition with a prayerful outburst.

We, accepting the request of Our Brother Francesco Cacucci, Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto, along with that of many other Brothers in the Episcopate and numerous faithful, and having received the judgment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, by Our Apostolic Authority, grant that the Venerable Servant of God, Sister Elia of St. Clement, virgin of the Order of Discalced Carmelites of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, who consecrated her contemplative life to Christ in loving service to the Church, shall henceforth be called Blessed.
Her feast may be celebrated in the designated places and according to the norms of law each year on May 29.

Note: Blessed Elia of St. Clement was born in Bari, Italy, on January 17, 1901, the third daughter of Giuseppe Fracasso and Pasqua Cianci. She was baptized four days later by her uncle, Fr. Carlo Fracasso, and given the name Teodora.
In 1914, under the guidance of Fr. Pietro Fiorillo, O.P., her spiritual director, she entered the Dominican Third Order as a novice on April 20, 1914, taking the name Agnese. Despite her young age, she was granted a special dispensation to make her profession on May 14, 1915.
In 1917, her new confessor, Fr. Sergio Di Gioia, S.J., discerned that God was calling her to Carmel. She entered the Carmel of St. Joseph in Bari on April 8, 1920, and received the habit on November 24, 1920, taking the name Sister Elia of St. Clement. She made her first vows on December 4, 1921, and professed solemn vows on February 11, 1925.
Her short yet radiant life came to an end at noon on December 25, 1927, when she died of meningitis.
She was beatified on March 18, 2006, in a solemn ceremony. The Discalced Carmelite Order observes her optional memorial on May 29.

Know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.
These words of the Responsorial Psalm express the secret of the life of Blessed Nuno of St. Mary, a hero and saint of Portugal. The 70 years of his life belong to the second half of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th, which saw this nation consolidate its independence from Castille and expand beyond the ocean, not without a special plan of God opening new routes that were to favour the transit of Christ’s Gospel to the ends of the earth.
St. Nuno felt he was an instrument of this lofty design and enrolled in the militia Christi, that is, in the service of witness that every Christian is called to bear in the world. He was characterized by an intense life of prayer and absolute trust in divine help. Although he was an excellent soldier and a great leader, he never permitted these personal talents to prevail over the supreme action that comes from God.
St. Nuno allowed no obstacle to come in the way of God’s action in his life, imitating Our Lady, to whom he was deeply devoted and to whom he publicly attributed his victories. At the end of his life, he retired to the Carmelite convent whose building he had commissioned.
I am glad to point this exemplary figure out to the whole Church particularly because he exercised his life of faith and prayer in contexts apparently unfavourable to it, as proof that in any situation, even military or in war time, it is possible to act and to put into practice the values and principles of Christian life, especially if they are placed at the service of the common good and the glory of God.
