Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks could become visible to naked eye this month
A comet that is larger than Mount Everest could become visible to the naked eye in the coming weeks as it continues its first visit to the inner solar system in more than 70 years, say astronomers.
The icy body is a Halley-type comet – meaning it will turn up once, or possibly twice, in a lifetime.
Indeed 12P/Pons-Brooks, as it is known, completes its orbit once every 71.3 years, and is due to make its closest approach to the sun on 21 April.
While some reports suggest 12P/Pons-Brooks was spotted as far back as the 14th century, it is named after the French astronomer Jean-Louis #Pons who discovered it in 1812 and the British-American astronomer William Robert #Brooks who observed it on its next orbit in 1883.Thought to have a nucleus about 30km (20 miles) in diameter, it is classed as a #cryovolcanic #comet, meaning it erupts with dust, gases and ice when pressure builds inside as it is heated.
One such outburst last year caused it to brighten a hundredfold and garnered it the sobriquet of “the Devil Comet” after the haze that surrounds it formed a horned shape. While the comet – and its #green #tinge – has already been spotted in the night sky, experts say it is expected to become even brighter in the coming weeks.
“The comet is expected to reach a magnitude of 4.5 which means it ought to be visible from a dark location in the UK,” said Dr Paul Strøm, an astrophysicist at the University of Warwick -

During the April 8 total #solar #eclipse, when the sky darkens, you’ll see the brightest planet Venus pop into view on one side of the sun. On the other side of the sun, you’ll find the second-brightest planet, Jupiter. And if #Comet #Pons-#Brooks is bright enough, you’ll see it between Jupiter and the sun, but closer to Jupiter

The #comet #12P #Pons-Brooks is still undergoing outbursts now and then - but not as dramatic as last summer & fall: https://nickdjames.com/Comets/2024/12P_lightcurve_9arcsec.png - and is now more interesting for a structure-rich plasma tail and a faint dust tail fan to its right. But beware: these images were taken - this morning: https://spaceweathergallery2.com/indiv_upload.php?upload_id=203709 and https://spaceweathergallery2.com/indiv_upload.php?upload_id=203704 - by Michael Jäger with an 11-inch telescope under excellent conditions! The total coma magnitude is now 7.5-ish, rising nicely: https://cobs.si/obs/comet/484/

Important light curve of #comet #12P #Pons-Brooks with a 30" aperture, so after each of the outbursts the brightness falls back to a baseline - which is increasing smoothly: https://twitter.com/katsumi_comet/status/1747654905215824170. Still no real clue what the *total* brightness will be in March and April - and during the total solar eclipse on April 8th.

A veure qui ens sorprèn.#futbol #cinema #cultura

Comet 12/P Pons-Brooks is in outburst, having greatly increased in brightness a few days ago. I just observed it with my #Unistellar eVscope. The insert shows the comet's unusual appearance. #comet #pons-brooks
