Is there such a miracle as funding for a "roll your own" PhD in EU, UK, Canada, NZ?
I'm finding that most funded PhDs in plant science are slanted towards computation (either bioinformatics or remote sensing or AI) and that's not my forte nor my interest. I'd really like to be able to construct a research topic of my own given I'm not finding what I'm hoping for in advertised PhDs.
I'll never know if I don't ask, right?

I think I'd like to grow a fig tree. Any suggestions (variety, pot and size thereof vs lined/paved hole, AOB) for Northern England?

No teacher like experience...
I've eaten medlars before this, but it's just been tasting one or two of known cultivars.
This time it was buying a bag of unknown provenance.
I just realized medlars are like the goatse of the pomological world.

Icon Of Fruit Growing And Personality Of Albanian Agronomy: Abdin Dervish Çiçi
"Within 8 years (1956-1964) he created from nothing 1200 ha of vineyards, the largest plantation in the Balkans, perhaps even beyond. He would go out into the field before sunrise and return after dark. In the NB “Gjergj Dimitrov” he also received the rank of “General of Albanian orchards”."
Another lookup inspired by a post in the Albania sub-reddit.

@JimmyB Yep, the big trees took big ladders here.
-
All 5 trees planted today.
Apricot with a closeup of the chicken wire around the fence hoop to keep geese heads out.
Everything about 12-15ft spaced from others but I maintained my alignment sort of with half spaced diagonal between the apples that were almost 20 ft apart. They're all semi-dwarf except the Brooks plum is a dwarf. Some are "larger size" but I'm not sure if that's just the delivered tree, or the larger side of semi-dwarf.
-
Gravenstein apples 'first pink' stage. Weather looks ok but it's kind of early by a week or two.
-
New fruit trees and a currant today!
Hardy Chicago Fig, Titania Black Currant, Harcot Apricot semi dwarf, Comice European Pear semi-dwarf, Bosc European Pear semi-dwarf, Brooks Plum dwarf on St Julian rootstock, Imperial Epineuse Plum dwarf on St Julian rootstock.
Put the quart fig in a not-quite gallon pot under the lights, and put the other trees and currant in the garden soil pile.

CW: Why Your Ficus Trees in Phoenix are Dying Right Now
Sad for AZ gardeners - it is a lovely state and if it were not for the water issues, I would consider moving there (or NM).
Figs are tasty & wonderfully healthful in moderation.

CW: Do I need to soak cinder blocks in water
before using them to make raised bed walls?
I just planted a persimmon tree in the center of where previously there was a 4 x 4 cedar compost bin. The last set of boards are still there keeping the soil level a few inches higher than the surrounding ground. I want to replace the boards with concrete cinder blocks.
If yes, how long to soak them?
Or is this a bad idea - should I use cedar boards instead?

CW: Persimmon tree recommendations
I want to plant a persimmon tree in my small backyard and would like variety recommendations.
I'm in central North Carolina, Zone 7b, Trewartha code Cfhl. Last winter it got down to 11 deg F (-12 C).
The tree would need to be self-fertile ; prefer non-astringent.

hmmm... there's an old nursery rhyme that goes " 'round & 'round the mulberry bush, the monkey chased the weasel... "
But mulberries grow on big trees, not bushes. Do you think the rhyme refers to a different plant, or perhaps it's possible to coppice the tree to get a bush that still produces berries?

@urbanmicrofarmer Looks like a great read, thanks for sharing!
The #FingerLakes region of Upstate New York where I live is literally bubbling with activity related to this #CiderRevival. I worked in apple orchards & cideries myself for many years
More recently I helped create #OpenAccess digital collections related to #pomology and #cider making at the Biodiversity Heritage Library, as part of a larger series of events we hosted at Cornell's Mann Library

It's a little known fact that the greatest pomologist in living memory, #johnmastodon , was a silent collaborator on the research of many other great pomologists, such as Autio and Greene, writing papers such as: https://journals.ashs.org/hortsci/view/journals/hortsci/26/7/article-p840.xml

For the past few years I’ve been collecting scans of antiquarian books on #pomology. They’ve been the basis for private research and a few articles, and the occasional historic #perry or #cider recipe recreation. But I keep forgetting references, or losing notes, so finally put them all into #zotero! Should do the paper books too.

#Introduction I'm a middle-aged, disabled Masters student at UC Davis in the Graduate Group of Horticulture & Agronomy. I came to Davis to do #PlantBreeding, but my Masters project is on almond vegetative bud development. I have done & will continue to do interdisciplinary work on carob (Ceratonia siliqua). Interdisciplinary work and #SciComm are of particular interest to me. #Pomology #Horticulture #Botany #PlantScience #UCAccessNow

First crop 'Ichi Ki Kei Jiro' Asian persimmons. I'm impressed with this cvr, a nonastringent type with excellent tasting fruits on a small (9ft/3m) tree. Flavor's best when fruits turn a deep orange on the tree. I plan to graft more of these.

Not many people have registered yet. How can I find more people interested in #gardening and #pomology to join this #instance? If I just reach out here on mastodon, I'll only find people who already have an account. Any tips?
