On my way to #polnet conference in Manchester, currently on the first leg of the Zürich-Paris-London-Manchester train journey.

I've never taken a plane during my academic career. It's one of the relatively easy things in terms of reducing the carbon cost of your research practice. I always put up a little post about these train journeys still, as a little ritual and to make my small contribution to normalizing the practice.

Looking outside is an unwelcome reminder of why we should care.
France just looks incredibly dry outside my TGV window. Shades of yellow instead of green.

Hey Fedi, I will be in #manchester at a conference (#polnet) in two weeks. Any hints/ tips for an area to stay in? I have my folding bike with me, so I am pretty mobile (and working on #urban topics, I like the perspective that gives me traversing a city).
I will take one day off to do abit of cycling in the Peak District, so I was (purely looking at the map) also considering even a bit out, like Stockport or New Mills...
I've never been to Manchester, but strangely, this is my third trip (of a total of four outside Switzerland) within a year to the North of England, after Sheffield (#algorithmicpattern2025) and Newcastle (hiking Hadrian's Wall) last year. But I am looking forward to it, I've loved both city and countryside then.
