  1. Donald Trump Heading for the Golf Course Instead of the Situation Room

The Disconnect: Leadership Challenges Amidst Escalating Conflict and Economic Strain by Winston Wendell The Middle East is inching toward a crisis. Two U.S. service members lost their lives this week, and the Pentagon confirmed it. All out war with Iran doesn't just seem possible, it feels closer than it has in months. Meanwhile, inflation keeps gnawing away at paychecks, and gas prices are spiking again thanks to more trouble in the Persian Gulf. At home, folks are feeling squeezed, but […]

Jack Bass, a famous journalist who wrote about South Carolina politics and civil rights, has died at age 91. His work explained big changes in the South.

  4. Teen Vogue, which had in the last decade become known as a place for young people to get their political news, is folding into Vogue.com and its editor, Verna Sharma, is stepping down. Here's the official announcement. It makes no reference to whether politics reporting will continue, stating: "As a dedicated pillar on Vogue, Teen Vogue will focus its content on career development, cultural leadership and other issues that matter most to young people." Lex McMenamin, the magazine's only politics reporter, announced on Bluesky earlier today that she has been laid off, along with multiple other staffers.

  5. Politico, having palpably learned NOTHING from the journalistic debacle of the campaign for #election2024, is publishing a story today (don't count on me for a link) which consists in name-dropping and speculating about who has the best chances of winning the primaries for… the 2028 US presidential election. Is there yet a #BrokenPolitico hashtag @jeffjarvis ?

  6. Like the MediaWatch hosts, I'm wont to carp about the gossip columning that passes for political reporting these days (with a few honorable exceptions like Mihinarangi Forbes, Jack Tame and Phil Pennington). But it just hit me why it bothers me so much.

  7. Wow. I just blew my own mind. What I didn't think of when I was posting that, would be that creating these automated feeds (newswire bots?) would be an act of political #journalism. Like what Scoop does by publishing press releases. It creates a searchable index of information that's open source (in the original sense of the phrase).

In theory, anything that can be read online by a human can be read by a bot, and turned into an AP feed (and RSS feed, and Nostr feed, etc).

  8. I despair of #PoliticalJournalism, seeing the WashingtonPost staff’s supposed summary of what #DystopiaDeSantis and the GOP want to do to America.

Did they kick @pbump out of the room while they wrote this?

  9. My YouTube recommendation suggests cspan just as much as it does “calming videos for dogs”

Which I don’t know if I should be proud, embarassed, or impressed at how accurate that is 🥲😂🎉

  10. @pbump has been demonstrating that which much of #PoliticalJournalism is missing: analysis.

  11. CW: U.S. Political Journalism

Great piece on the skewed incentives in modern mainstream political journalism by Dan Froomkin:

    presswatchers.org/2022/11/here

"reporters respond to four core constituencies: Their editors, their sources, their peers, and right-wing trolls.

The public – and the obligation to accurately inform the public – just doesn’t rank. (And infuriating the left is considered a plus.)"
