  1. 📰 America’s Biggest Irrigated Crop Is Lawn Grass 😬

🌎 U.S.: With **40+ million acres** of turf blanketing the country, experts warn that our yards have become ecological dead zones, in the midst of rapid insect and bird population declines.

🦋 Native plants otoh feed caterpillars, support specialist insects, and rebuild the energy pathways that lawns erase.

👉 Dedicate just a corner of your yard to natives and restore the wildlife pantry.
A single oak, a viburnum, or a patch of goldenrod and coneflower can jump‑start a functioning food web right outside your door.

  2. A hummingbird hawk-moth was flying among the lavender flowers when @Konenpanien and I were on the way to the supermarket this morning. We don't always have the opportunity to see one that stays among the same flowers long enough to film it. It's a pity we didn't have a better camera with us.

  3. Quanto mais relvado, menos diversidade! Transforme o seu jardim num paraíso para polinizadores, plante espécies diversas e floridas, de preferência autóctones ou comestíveis.

#alttext: Jardim florido - muitos insetos, borboletas, abelhas, libélulas, joaninhas, grilos, e muitos outros; relvado e algumas flores - borboletas, mosquitos, moscas, vespas; só relvado - moscas e mosquitos.

  4. Relocating some guests before Neem and insecticidal soap countermeasures were deployed against a burgeoning infestation of what looked like flea beetles on a very adjacent tomato plant.

These are almost certainly Viceroy caterpillars. They mimic Monarchs in markings in this stage and butterfly with a notable difference being size. I farm them instead of dill this season, apparently. There’s always the fall. :blobcataww:

  5. In recognition of the pivotal role that youth can play in addressing challenges bees and other pollinators are facing, World Bee Day 2024 focuses on the theme "Bee engaged with Youth." This theme highlights the importance of involving young people in beekeeping and pollinator conservation efforts, recognising them as the future stewards of our environment.

  6. Saw the first bees of the spring today. I don't think I've ever seen bees in February before, but it was 60F here and the species crocus were in full bloom.

  7. Some photos taken about a week ago out in the garden. There is a lot of yellow right now. The really tall ones are Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum) and Cutleaf coneflower 'Herbstsonne' (Rudbeckia laciniata 'Herbstsonne'). I'm not sure on the shorter Rudbeckia- might be 'fuldiga'. The #Polinators love all of them.

  8. Pollinators! There are a ton of #bees out there this morning. Most of them aren't sitting still long enough to get a photo. 😁

  9. All black Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa) in the garden. They go nuts for the sage we have (Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips'). Zero pesticide + organic native garden = polinator heaven. Given our climate the sage blooms almost 10 months out of the year #nature #NaturePhotography #bee #bees #carpernterbees #insects #bugs #garden #polinators #organic #blackandwhite
