Paramount snatched "The Naked Gun" / "Police Squad" rights from Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams and instead gave the material to a different Jew Akiva Schaffer to adopt. And while Schaffer is a good comedy / parody director, it seems like the movie ended up being just "merely clever".

The Naked Gun (2025) is really funny. And I watched the original this morning, so this is a fresh comparison. Lots of Zucker style jokes and plenty of new stuff that had a Lonely Island feel. There was also a fair amount of weird dated referential humor that may have been McFarlane's influence, but honestly was probably just more Lonely Island guys stuff.

For a long, long time this sounded like a very bad idea. With a few rare exceptions (Loaded Weapon 1, which this reminds me of) few really "got" why these films were funny.
So I was skeptical.
Then I heard Liam Neeson was cast, and it made me wonder... that might be perfect casting.
But I didn't hold my breath.
Then this dropped today.
