"Many of the Minnesota officials and activists I spoke with were not all that surprised when the federal government launched the surge in December. “Trump has said a lot of really abusive, horrible things about the Somali community,” Keith Ellison, Minnesota’s attorney general, told me. “It was an inevitable situation.” At first, the ICE agents focussed their deportation efforts on Somali businesses and neighborhoods, but the Administration had overlooked one crucial fact about the vast majority of the Somali community in Minnesota. “These are American citizens. They’re here legally. They got here on Delta,” Jacob Frey told me. “Once the agents realized that,” he continued, “they diverted their attention to Latino people and Southeast Asian people and everybody else.”
Over all, Minnesota has a relatively small number of undocumented immigrants, around a hundred thousand people. But the motive behind Operation Metro Surge may have been something else entirely. “I think Donald Trump just hates that he lost Minnesota three times,” Tim Walz told me. “He personally hates our progressive policies, and they decided that Minnesota was going to be a target, and it escalated from there.” Still, as David Wilson, a local immigration attorney, observed, “I just don’t think all of us really at the time saw the scale of it coming, or how committed they were to the bit.”
Luis Argueta, Jr., the communications director of Unidos MN, a Minnesota immigrant-rights organization, said the initial rumor was that the Trump Administration would be sending a hundred agents. “And we’re freaking out,” he told me. “We’re, like, ‘Oh, my God, one hundred agents!’ ”
The first agents to arrive from out of town seemed poorly trained to handle local opposition. Minnesotans who recorded videos of ICE arrests were threatened with Tasers, pepper-sprayed, shoved to the ground, or arrested."

"A growing campaign of vigilantism and vandalism against the billion-dollar startup Flock is sweeping across the United States.
Flock makes and sells surveillance cameras that monitor and log the license plates of cars, and relies on AI to track people as they pass by. The company has at least 135,000 cameras in the U.S., allowing police officers from all over the country to tap into Flock's massive nationwide camera network for investigations, including cameras outside their jurisdictions. Flock cameras are also sold to private businesses and residential organizations, like homeowner associations, extending the network of cameras that cops can access into residential spaces.
But public opinion is shifting firmly against license plate trackers like Flock. A recent poll shows that more Americans oppose law enforcement's use of license plate camera trackers than support them, a reversal from a year ago when the majority of Americans said they were in favor of the technology.
People are cutting down Flock cameras placed on roadside poles at a near-daily rate. Some cameras have been smashed, spray-painted, and shot at, while some people are relying on novel methods of destroying Flock cameras, like spraying foam-expanding sealant into them. One incredibly stubborn man sat in front of a Flock camera with a 12-foot-pole to lawfully block it out of sheer hatred for the thing. And, TikTok is awash with guides on how to identify Flock cameras, while some are documenting their efforts showing how to covertly disable them."

"Flock taught cops how they could surveil the No Kings protests and “small parades” using a mix of Flock’s technology and law enforcement’s own databases in a webinar last year. As Flock publicly downplays the power of its automated license plate camera network and highlights its use to solve violent crime, the company’s seemingly endless trove of webinars, training sessions, and blog posts show it offers far more invasive capabilities.
In the webinar, Flock’s director of market management Caity Peak explains how real time crime centers — which are police surveillance centers that utilize Flock cameras and other surveillance cameras — can be used for emergency response, but can also be used to surveil “established events” like 4th of July fireworks displays, parades, bike races, Mardi Gras, and protests. The webinar shows just how routine the idea of always-on surveillance has become, and how casually it is used during extremely innocuous events.
Peak explains that police can use FlockOS, a software platform that combines Flock’s automatic license plate readers (ALPR), drones, gunshot detectors, 911 data, and other surveillance cameras (including ones Flock does not own) into a “single pane of glass” or single piece of software to look at various types of surveillance in one place during both emergencies and relatively mundane events in a city or town."

"While standing in a private parking lot in Sussex, Wisconsin, on May 4, 2025, Napoleon Jones witnessed a traffic stop made by an out-of-county police officer. "It just didn't sit right with me," Jones told TMJ4 News, a local NBC News affiliate. "So I did what I legally could do, and I walked over and recorded it."
Jones, a United States Navy veteran, was well within his rights to record the police stop. But even though he recorded from a safe distance without interfering, that didn't stop the Waukesha County Sheriff's deputy, Brandon Shayhorn, from later unlawfully stopping and arresting Jones.
After Shayhorn completed the traffic stop, Jones returned to his vehicle. But before Jones could exit the parking lot, Shayhorn turned on his lights and initiated a second stop, claiming Jones' temporary license plate, displayed in the rearview window, was unreadable, reports TMJ4 News. Shayhorn demanded to see Jones' driver's license, but Jones refused, arguing that he'd been unlawfully pulled over on private property. Video clips of the encounter show the deputy opening Jones' door and pulling him from his vehicle."

Cities are Replacing Flock with Axon / Motorola for their Mass Surveillance Network
Flock Safety became the protested brand. Axon Enterprise now sells Outpost and Lightpost readers that livestream and feed Axon Fusus; Fleet cameras scan plates from patrol cars. Motorola Solutions bought VaaS for $445 million in 2019 and kept Vigilant Solutions and Digital Recognition Network. The vendor changes, the mass surveillance network remains.
Cameras are not the only issue with surveillance systems like these. These devices can also log Audio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and RFID and other signals your devices broadcast. Then they fuse data collected without warrants with commercial data-broker records and "AI", to create a comprehensive database of everyone surveiled, who everyone is, what that are doing, and what they "will do".
These are not just cameras or license plate readers, this is a surveillance network. It's a violation of privacy and the 4th amendment. And we should not let this happen.

"The system is now vastly more complex. Aside from the ubiquitous cameras, it is not possible to move around a city on any form of transport or pay for anything without the apps, and they always know who and where you are. In Yangzhou’s Geyuan 个园, a lovely traditional courtyard garden of rock and bamboo, you need to watch a video advertisement and scan your face to get toilet paper. Once only: the dispenser remembers who you are and won’t give you seconds. Some parts of Beijing look like a spoof science fiction film about a surveillance state: we visited a friend in a part of Haidian District where there are a lot of government buildings and housing compounds. There are horizontal bars above the street every 50 meters, each bar holding more than a dozen different cameras—we counted them. Our friend pointed out the different types: that one reads license plates, this one is for facial recognition of pedestrians, this one scans the faces of people inside cars, that one is used for gait recognition, who knows what that odd-looking one does? His apartment complex gate no longer had security guards: During the pandemic they were replaced with face-scanners that admit only registered residents.
The ever present surveillance must be one factor behind the remarkable improvement in public manners everywhere we went in China. Very little spitting, no jostling to get off planes, people seem to respect personal space much more than they used to. But it’s not just the cameras and facial recognition software. One friend in his fifties in Beijing said that the pandemic had changed everyone, but also that his parents’ generation were mostly dead or housebound—“they all had really rough manners because of the way China was when they were young.” WeChat and the other apps also mean there’s far less need for physical queues, and no point in jostling to get ahead if you are in one."

"Brevard County deputy sheriff Michael Fultz resigned from the force after an internal investigation detailed extreme cases of alleged sexual misconduct, racism, and abuse, including Fultz’s use of Flock to stalk his ex-girlfriend. News6 in Florida first reported the story, and 404 Media has uncovered additional details about the former deputy’s use of Flock after obtaining a copy of the investigation.
Hired in 2024, Brevard County named Fultz its Deputy of the Year in 2025. The day of the ceremony Fultz’s ex-girlfriend sent a letter of complaint to the sheriff’s office with a long list of complaints about his behavior. The letter was enough to prompt the sheriffs to investigate Fultz which is when they discovered he’d used Flock to stalk her.
The 43-page investigation found Fultz had posed for pictures as Adolf Hitler, freely used racial slurs in texts, masturbated on camera in his police vehicle, took pictures of his ex-girlfriend with his service weapon in her mouth during sex, repeatedly broke the law to generate clout online for his motorcycle themed Instagram and TikTok accounts, and used Flock to stalk his ex-girlfriend."

Exclusive: EU Commission still seeking controversial police agreement with Israel, despite warnings
2022, negotiations on a police agreement between the European Union and the Israeli government reportedly came to a halt over concerns related to Israel’s occupation of Palestine.1 Yet, an investigation by Statewatch shows discussions have continued—and involve a standoff between the #EuropeanCommission and the Council of the #EuropeanUnion.
Statewatch has learned that not only could the agreement be in breach of international law, but that the Commission kept negotiating even during the ongoing genocide against the Palestinians. If adopted, the deal may allow for the exchange of sensitive personal data between the #EU and #Israel, which could be used in occupied territories. Experts warn this could lead to state-sanctioned human rights violations against both Palestinians and Israelis.

A video recorded at a gas station in Lake Worth, Florida, shows an ICE/Border Patrol demanding ID from a U.S. citizen. When the citizen asks why, the agent responds, "Because you're an immigrant." Before even verifying his identity, fascists grab his hands and place him in handcuffs. Bystanders immediately step in to question how someone can be arrested without even being identified first, but the fascists ignore them and walk the man to their vehicle.
This encounter highlights a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment, which protects individuals from unreasonable searches and seizures. Requiring someone to prove their citizenship before being handcuffed, based solely on an arbitrary claim, demonstrates a concerning violation of constitutional rights by a paramilitary acting without accountability.
