Last Night Was Killer by Mary Pauline Lowry

A murder mystery that will make you laugh out loud about a single mom who finally gets a night out without the kids. Alls well until she finds a body and she doesn’t know if she killed him.

Tilly Turner is an out of work comedian with twin daughters. When she moves home with mom, her mother dies leaving her to make a life for herself and kids on her own. Tilly has relied a lot on her mom.

Her next-door neighbor and mother’s best friend thinks Tilly needs to get away from her kids more, so she gifts Tilly a pole dance class.

The first night she meets a group of people much like herself, all struggling. They go out after class to watch the professional pole dancers and have a few drinks. Tilly wakes up the next morning with a hangover and no memory of anything after meeting at the bar.

She and the girls go to the store for a few groceries and after Tilly buckles the girls into their seats, she opens the trunk of her car to find a dead body. The man is scrunched into her car with his pants down.  

Tilly recognizes him as a man who approached her in the bar and got kicked out. Had he waited for her and tried something funny? Did she kill him? If not, who did and why stick him in her car?

At the same time, Tilly meets a sexy cop. Someone she thinks she could have a relationship with but how can she make that happen with a dead man in her trunk?

Tilly is dealing with losing her mother and her job and being totally on her own for the first time. It’s all about a found family and what people are willing to do for each other. The storyline is complicated enough to keep you guessing.

This is my first book by this author, but I do hope to read more. If you like your stories a little on the wild side, this may be a perfect read for you. This reminded me a little of the Finley Donovan series but a little grittier.

This is a new release that was published July 7, 2026.

Sex work everywhere is facing erasure from public life. In Amsterdam’s Red Light District, the combined forces of gentrification, repression, hetero-cis sexism, and stigma are threatening its future. Just adding that a big factor in my enjoyment of pole-dancing is the people at the studio I'm attending. It's a very inclusive and non-judgemental place. I've never heard any criticism or hatred from anyone there. If someone is struggling with moves on the pole, instructors only give helpful advice and encouragement.

The studio owner is also very supportive of queer people. She and others from the studio often perform at events which also feature various LGBTQ+ people (most noticeably drag performers) and, a few weeks ago, she cancelled Saturday classes at short notice to represent the studio in the Hobart pride march, forgoing some income to do so.

I recently did my second-ever pole-dancing performance, about 8 months after I started attending classes. The video's below; I'm on the front-right pole.

I'm still rather self-conscious and critical of myself, but I really enjoy pole-dancing and can see that I've improved over time, so will definitely keep going with it.

I had a great time at the #WICMP #WICMP11 over the weekend. The #poledancing workshop went by so quickly. I even had to come up with additional beginner tricks for the participants to try as they kept doing things on their first or second attempt. ☺️

On the next day we switched to freestyle pole while the DJ was doing their thing. No wotkshop this time as it was way too loud. Totally forgot to take some photos of myself (like most of the time).

4.5 months ago, I started learning pole-dancing. Two days ago, I performed a group routine as part of the studio's in-house showcase.

I'm very self-conscious, and can't help comparing and judging myself negatively against other performers, but honestly I did OK considering that I haven't been pole-dancing for long and am nearly 50.
