TIL about the #Tvind wind turbine, we visited the site close to our #PolarRES #ECR bootcamp. It's actually a more astonishing story than I thought: a community with no major know-how or backing decides to build a wind turbine and ends up building the largest wind turbine on earth, and the first multiMW turbine ever.
It's still working too. Quite an inspiring story, even if some parts of the organisation have later come into question.
Edit: thanks to @kristianpagh who first told me about it! -
New #PolarRES publication 🎉
📌The study employed #CMIP6 models and a #storyline approach to investigate #Antarctic #climatechange #scenarios for the end of the century 🔎

💡 Check out the latest episode of the Explain it in Two Ways #video series 🎥
👉In this episode, Clara Lambin and Damien Maure demystify the concept of #coupled #climatemodels for both the general and #scientific public. 📣

@ingalls @RagnarHeidar output from Harmonie-Arome is a thing of beauty - but it's also nothing like as easy to run as WRF! OTOH it's faster thanks to the dynamical core...
I use the #climate version though, not NWP (when my inbox permits.. 🙄), currently trying to get a nested version to run over West #antarctica for katabatic winds, which is fun, and we have ALADIN physics for the mesoscale over the polar regions as part of #CORDEX. -
Very cool that some of our #Ukraine partners in @PolarRES have made it to Utrecht in person to present some of their results on #Lagrangian #ParticleTracking under the Ross and Filchner-Ronne #IceShelves as part of the #PolarRES + #PolarCORDEX meeting

Welcome to the #Fediverse to colleagues in @PolarRES -
a #HorizonEurope project developing and running leading edge #RCMs (regional #ClimateModels) of both the #Arctic + #Antarctica...
#PolarRES is also something of a sister project to @OceanIceEU

This morning I have been sitting in a review of our #PolarRES project with EC + an independent scientist.
It's incredibly cool, seeing progress over the last 18 months, some incredible work already done + lots more on the way. This figure shared by PI Priscilla Mooney struck me again.
What we're trying to do with the very high resolution #RCMs and the stretched grids in the #GCMs is *hard* + never really tried before.Awesome #outreach plan too

On a #PolarRES call with collaborators in #Ukraine who are joining with power for their computer + internet only from their recently installed #SolarPanels.
#DistributedPower from #Renewables is also a way of building societal #Robustness as well as reducing #EnergyDependence on enemy regimes.

The building of the #NationalAntarcticScienceCenter of #Ukraine (our #PolarRES partners) was hit by a missile a few weeks ago. Thankfully no-one was killed.

If I can add more evidence of #Ukraine's #badassery (which if you read the piece you will see is not entirely unproblematic), #UkrainianScientists continued to run ultra #highResolution regional #ClimateModels, until the electricity was cut off by missiles. They are still writing + editing #IPCC reports, participating in #UNFCCC + #COP27 + planning #Antarctic #Fieldwork.
Proud to have them as partners in #HorizonEU #PolarRES

Almost the last trip of the year: To Liege to talk #PROTECT +#POLARRES with the #MAR group and to examine a PhD thesis. Looking forward to some good discussions with Xavier Fettweis and the rest of the group on coupled #ClimateModel development with #ocean #SeaIce + #IceSheet, next gen #RegionalClimateModels and how to choose #CMIP6 #ESMs for #downscaling.
