  2. A floating igloo leaves France for a polar exploration mission.

The Tara Polar Station set out from France on Sunday to begin a long-term mission to study biodiversity in the Arctic.

The floating laboratory, shaped like an igloo, is designed to withstand sea-ice pressure and to endure temperatures as low as -52º.

  3. "#Onthisday in 1929, Richard Byrd and his crew completed the first flight over the South Pole in the Ford Tri-Motor “Floyd Bennett.” "With Byrd at the South Pole," was released in 1930, documenting the fourteen months Byrd and his crew spent in the Antarctic. Learn more about Richard Byrd's arctic adventures in #TerraCognito, on display, pre-security, in the Aviation Museum and Library in the International Terminal. 4. Today, it is 70 years since #GeorgeMurrayLevick passed away. This British Antarctic explorer made observations on penguins that were considered too shocking for the world. They are recounted in A Polar Affair, an unusual and colourful book of #PolarExploration, #Penguins, and perversion.

  6. Meanwhile, horror author Ally Wilkes made her name in desperate tales of the golden age of polar exploration, but her next one, Man Eater - due in February 2027 - is set in the fevered jungles of the Amazon during the late Victorian orchid-hunting craze. What drives a human to go off seeking the unknown? Ally will guide us through some of the explorer archetypes.

  7. Fun fact about Svalbard Polar Bears. Svalbard is home to more polar bears than people, making it a unique destination for wildlife enthusiasts. #WildlifeAdventure #PolarExploration #advntrup Image Credit:@tiffmakeswaves on instagram

  14. The joy of serendipitous discovery!

Come in looking for one thing and leave with so much more than you knew you wanted or needed. Community curation of Flickr Commons--by its members and by the public--is a great way to visualize the connectedness of this massive digital archive. We've pulled out some good examples in this blog post. Circus performers! Historical photographers! Polar flight in the 1920s!

  18. I'm quite hung up on books about Antarctic exploration, especially in the late 1800s/early 1900s. My favourite so far is The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard, and it's the story of Scott's ill-fated trip to the South Pole. So grim...but I'm right into it! #Antarctic #Antarctica #exploration #PolarExploration

  19. This REALLY is an amazing book - an account of #Scott's fateful journey to the South Pole told by one of the expedition's survivors. What these #Polar explorers went through is unimaginable. It's an honest, unemotional and unfiltered account ... quite disturbing towards the end. #CaptainScott #SouthPole #PolarExploration
