CW: Some thoughts on Trainer Tips Nick's Pokémon GO-focused interview with Niantic Community Manager Mx. Kelsey Danger
The following is a long-form response to a video on the Trainer Tips YouTube channel between Pokémon GO player/content creator Nick and Mx. Kelsey Danger, community manager for Niantic:
It's interesting to me how the pre-COVID Pokémon GO is described as "legacy" gameplay, whereas what I consider "legacy" PoGO changed quite some time before that already.
The core gameplay difference to me between true legacy and pre-COVID gameplay / current gameplay, is the near-constant stream of events that fuels Fear Of Missing Out and personally burns me out on the game.
When I started playing PoGO I felt like I could play whenever I wanted, without the fear of missing out on some shiny, costume or legacy move Pokémon. I could skip a day if I not felt like it, without ruining my streak, missing a spotlight hour, a raid hour, or one of the constant weekend events, some timed research, or a collection challenge. Spawns, in my memory at least, also felt better/more logically distributed. For example, if I wanted Magikarp, I'd go to the piers. Now it just feels like whichever set of Pokémon of the week are spawning everywhere regardless of location. Sure, my city for some reason had overabundance of Voltorbs and Magnemites, and my sister-in-law's was Drowzee-land, but apart from that it felt a lot more like a world where exploration actually paid off; especially before the footprints radar got replaced by the Nearby and Pokéstop spawn lists.
I think Niantic is actually trying to cater too much to a too wide variety of players. Kelsey said something like "we cannot be everything to everyone but we can still make an excellent product", and I feel like that Niantic is in fact trying to be everything to everyone, and as a result is hurting their game.
Last Community Day was another example in a way of this. On the one hand Niantic seemed to want to focus on making people move, with the walking distance timed research and the incense nerf combined with incense duration extension, but on the other hand the spawn clusters and Lure bonuses made me want to just stay in place to catch and shiny-check as many as I could to benefit from the bonuses and to 'catch them all' rather than explore.And yes, I know that as a player I don't need to do everything, but knowing that and what FOMO is, and not actually feeling the effects of it, are two different things. I think that if Niantic wants to show that they care about the player-base's well-being by focusing on the exploration and exercise part, they should also put more focus on the mental well-being of their players, and make the effort to stop pushing the FOMO-aspect of the game, even when that is at odds with their financial focus.

This is especially recommended for the #Pokémon that have been featured during a #CommunityDay in 2019 and 2020 as you can afterwards evolve them to get their #LegacyMove during the upcoming #CommunityDays this weekend.

There was a time where seeing a #Chansey at a nearby #Pokéstop would've made me run out half-naked, regardless of the time of day or what I was doing...
But it's mostly been nerved, in part by the introduction of other #Pokémon, and due to in-game #PokémonGO events it's also not that rare anymore...
Sure, while I already have 1 shiny I'd still like another to evolve it into a shiny #Blissey, but I'm not gonna chase after it.
I kinda miss that feeling from early on... -

I think I overdid the #grocery shopping run...
Not as much on what I got, but more on how heavy it was to carry it home in, and hanging from, my backpack while walking home.
Also probably shouldn't have made that detour while carrying it to play a bit of #PokémonGO & #WizardsUnite and get some fresh air.My neck, shoulders and back are sore, but my #dailies are done, I got some #dailyExercise and we hopefully don't need to do groceries for a few days.

Managed to get 2 #shinyPokemon during this #Rhydon #PokémonGO #CommunityDay, and a bunch of high IV and/or CP #Pokémon. :) Would've liked to have found and caught at least one more shiny Rhydon so I would've been able to have one of each evolution, but with the low Pokéstop density around here, it's not a bad haul. :)

I also enjoyed playing a bit more of #PokémonGO than usual, and managed to spot 2 #Gyarados in the wild and plenty of #Magikarp thanks to the #LunarNewYear event. :) None of them shiny unfortunately. :( The hunt for my first one continues I guess.

Anyway, with #BeardGrabber asleep next to his mum in the bedroom, maybe I can get a bit of #dailyExercise as well as a late hack in #Ingress and perhaps hunt for a #Mimikyu costume #Pikachu in #PokémonGO :)
I'll probably also have #HarryPotterWizardsUnite register its 250m walked #dailies, even though I don't really play that game anymore.
I definitely need to fit more exercise into my schedule... Really wish we had an affordable gym nearby, preferably if I could go there together with someone. -
A tad disappointing catches this #PokémonGO #CommunityDay. Just a single #shiny #Trapinch (which I fully evolved into a #Flygon), and most of the #Pokémon were also low IV compared to previous event days.
Probably to do with the tweaked spawn #algorithms…Oh well, at least it was good to be outside for some #DailyExercise, even though it's definitely starting to turn towards #winter weather!

Hmmpf, I've hatched over 50 eggs in #PokémonGO this week; even put 5km eggs in the finite (super) incubators, even though I usually reserve them for 10km eggs, and used up my remaining coins on an Adventure Box wi5h more incubatoes, but I still haven't hatched one of the event #Uknown #Pokémon...
Instead I've gotten a bunch of #dratini and #ralts and other #Pokemon that I already have plenty of good ones of... and gotten more 5km and 2km eggs than I can hatch... -
Instead of scrolling through the #PokémonGO and #PokemonGO timelines looking manually for #friendCodes, I guess I should write a bot/parser to do it for me.
Now if only people would always include their friend codes in text form, rather than a QR image, or worse, a screenshot of their numeric friend code...

Yeah, this was a good #PokémonGO #CommunityDay for shiny and high IV/CP catches!
Especially happy with the lucky 100%, high IV #Mudkip I got from a trade with @Siiw. Immediately fully evolved that one to a #Swampert and gave it a second charge move!
Also, this was a nice 4 hours of walking as my #dailyExercise :D

My second thought: couldn't they also have added a percentage/tier indicator on the list overview, so I don't even need to appraise my Pokémon to see if it's crap? Would definitely help with #CommunityDay events. -

and of course, my walk ended up quite a bit longer as intended, as I enjoyed the fresh air.
The ground and grass were rather wet, and thus so did my shoes/feet because I decided to wear the wrong kind of shoes after rain... nevertheless, I enjoyed my #dailyExercise.Got some more unique hacks for the #Ingress Myriad event, did my #PokémonGO #dailies, and encountered some high level things in #WizardsUnite.

I enjoyed a nice long late evening #walk as part of my #dailyExercise, while playing a mix of #Ingress, #PokémonGO and #HarryPotter #WizardsUnite. I mostly played the latter, as I'm not yet max level in that.
I ended up spending too much time outside perhaps, so it will probably be a bit tough to wake up in time, especially as I don't quite feel sleepy yet.
Definitely could use some more #exercise, or push myself more, but something is better than nothing.
