  1. Billy's Goddam Band

Out in the alley smoking a
Joint before the Xyna Gallery gig
A Ryder truck pulls up w/more gear than
Fits in the storefront we’re playing
And out steps Billy Fucking Corgan
And his goddam band. Guess we
Have an opener! Did they miss the
Turn off to the Stadium?! Two
Guitar hockey rink rock which I like
When I’m not annoyed, aloofness like
    They were goddam Smashing Pumpkins.

the one pulled from a cage of ribs

  9. I love this poem written by the great Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. I like the surprise.

    “A Poppy Blooms”

    I write, erase, rewrite

    Erase again, and then

    A poppy blooms.

  10. Confession

    Countee Cullen

If for a day joy masters me,
    Think not my wounds are healed;
Far deeper than the scars you see,
    I keep the roots concealed.

    They shall bear blossoms with the fall;
I have their word for this,
Who tend my roots with rains of gall,
    And suns of prejudice.

  13. grab a handful.
    you yank,
    i'll tug,
    we'll both pull,
    reciprocating our efforts.

  14. what must it be like to live
until the very moment you die
    to simply plummet
    from the ancient Yew
    a bright note, quelled
    by a Cooper's Hawk
    or the insolence
    of the neighbor's cat?

    birds don’t waste a thought
    on the inevitability of endings
    because they have the sky
    and the sky has them

    A Right And Proper Tonality
    June 20, 2022

they said it wasn’t exciting enough
    more vibrato, more intensity

    twenty-seven coffees later
    three octaves higher

    they lied
    they so very clearly lied

    standing interference patterns denied
    please stop the keening

    then the harpies arrived
    analytics falling to the side

    while we enjoyed our dreaming
    swilling coffee, extra cream

    nestlings piping merrily
    fed on critics screaming
