Pezhvakha-ye Shiraz / De weerklank van Shiraz / Echoes of Shiraz

This entire recital is dedicated to the poetry of Hafez and Saadi, both from Shiraz. Their poems, written in the 13th and 14th centuries, are still very popular in Iran and surrounding countries. The recital begins with an introduction into the characteristics of the ghazal, the type of poem that we recite. Subsequently the poems will be recited: first the Persian original, then the Dutch translation. All poems will be accompanied by one or more musicians, on various instruments including setar, trumpet and double bass. Between the poems there will be interludes of various musicians.
About the book Pezhvakha-ye Shiraz / De weerklank van Shiraz / Echoes of Shiraz
This book, a short anthology, was specially written for this recital and everyone in the audience will be given a copy. In the book you will find twelve ghazals by Hafez and Saadi, both the original Persian text plus transliteration and the Dutch and English translations. The translations were written by Daniel Gerdes and Ghazaleh Alimardani together. Frans Poolen and Guus de Vries also participated in this cheerful project by commenting on the draft translations.
About this recital
Above all, we hope to create a colourful performance, devoted entirely to the beauty of the ghazals that we recite. There will be a lot of music in order to enjoy the beauty of these poems even more. We also hope to make Dutch readers more familiar with the poems of Hafez and Saadi. And finally, our performance is meant as a cheerful plea for cultural openness.
About the performers
Ghazaleh Alimardani studied dramatic literature. She worked for a long time as a storytelling teacher for minor refugees who have no access to education. She is passionate about photography and literature such as Persian poems and in particular poems of Hafez and Saadi.
Daniel Gerdes works in the field of alternative dispute resolution. Translating poems is one of his hobbies. His book In de roes van liefde en wijn (In the ecstasy of love and wine), with translations of poems by Hafez, was published in 2024 and launched at Theater Perdu in Amsterdam.
Victor Gerdes, internist by profession, has enjoyed music all his life and plays the cello. He has played in various orchestras and bands. He is classically trained but open to all kinds of other music.
Micha Hes focuses in his work on issues relating to waste management and sustainability. His passion is theatre. He acted in several plays in the past and has enjoyed theatre ever since.
Egbert Jas plays the double bass and has been active in jazz and improvised music for several decades. How many decades is information he prefers not to disclose. He studied for some time at the Amsterdam conservatory. He toured with Frans Vermeersen’s All Ears, Stormy Weather, Ingram Washington and the band of Melvin Rosbief. In order to reach even more elevated levels of music, Egbert built his own instrument, an electric bass called The Singing Bookshelf.
Arash Mahdavian, born in Kermanshah in the west of Iran, is a civil engineer. He has been living in the Netherlands since 2011. He loves Iranian classical music. He has played tar and setar (instruments used in Iranian classical music) for more than thirty years.
Frans Poolen, who works as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, is passionate about literature. He is the author of several short stories and translations of prose and poems. Quite special about his translation activities is that he has translated poems by Hafez and Saadi into Maastricht dialect. As far as we know he is the first person in the world ever to do so.
Markward Smit plays the trumpet, the tuba and the trombone. He played in a large number of bands, including the Vivos, the Funfare, the High Society Jazz Band, Piece of Cake Jazz Band, Rainbow Jazz Valentines, Yezz Thats Jazz, Les Finesses, the Amstel Bigband, the Herb Spectacles and the Non Melting Ice Cream Band. He not only plays jazz but also other genres like soul, mariachi, klezmer and classical music.
Guus de Vries, who works as a piano teacher, studied French and conservatory (piano). More recently he studied literary translation at the vertalersvakschool (translation academy). He likes many types of art. In particular music, poetry and other types of literature because all these art forms, each in its own way, tell us a story.

Twenty Minutes of Silence

Join us on the evening of the 10th July at Boekhandel Perdu for an intimate reading with Kate Briggs. In the bookshop we will gather to celebrate the publication of Hélène Besette’s Twenty Minutes of Silence, a second translation from the French to appear in Fitzcarraldo blue. To mark the occasion, Kate will read from her translation before engaging in conversation with Mia You. The doors will open at 18.00 for a 18.30 start, and tickets are available via perdu.nl for 5€.
Kate Briggs is a writer, editor & translator based in Rotterdam, where she founded and co-runs Short Pieces That Move, a micro-press & pedagogical project. In 2025, she published the first English-language translation of Hélène Bessette’s debut novel, Lili is Crying (Fitzcarraldo Editions & New Directions), a finalist for the 2026 French-American translation prize. Editorial projects include A Social Practice of Unknowing Yourself in Real Time: Work on Conversation (co-edited with Laura Haynes following a residency at Glasgow School of Art (2025)) & Verbs for Practicing Togetherness, with graduates from the Masters in Artistic Research in & through Cinema at The Netherlands Film Academy (2026). She is most recently the author of I am not ready, a pamphlet of poems (SPTM, 2026). She teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute.
Mia You is the author of the poetry collections Festival (Belladonna, 2025) and I, Too, Dislike It (1913 Press, 2016), and the chapbooks Rouse the Ruse and the Rush (Nion Editions, 2023) and Objective Practice (Achiote Press, 2007). Her poems have appeared in Poetry magazine, the Boston Review, nY, De Gids, Nioques and the PEN Poetry Series. She teaches Anglophone literature at the Universiteit Utrecht and in the Critical Studies program at the Sandberg Institute.

Maison Avant Après - the latest collection fashion forward literature & annual Perdu Party

Maison Avant Après is a new project that opens up a space for literature on fashion. This evening, Maison Avant Après presents its debut collection Haute Écriture. This also marks Perdu’s season finale and continues into the early hours.
On 26 June Maison Avant Après presents their first collection Haute Écriture. The écrituriers of service turn their fascination for fashion into strange and dazzling pieces full of paradoxes. The practitioner of haute écriture spends years gathering enough impressions and spends hundreds of hours on the tiniest details. The pieces on show are made using complex techniques and paradoxical feelings. We see how fashion dictates strict laws and conceals oppression, but also offers possibilities to escape corsets and straightjackets.
During the presentation, the Maison proudly shows the result of this labour, hoping to form an artistic avant-garde together with the audience rather than a flock of passive fashion victims. There is no doubt that fashion has the power to mobilise the masses, but can the continuous metamorphosis on the catwalk bring about real, substantial change?
Afterwards, the show continues on the dance floor for the festive closure of Perdu’s cultural season with music, drinks, and aesthetic excess into the night.

Dress code: OverdressedDewi de Nijs Bik relates to the Radical Call for Love collection of fashion designer Marine Serre, who took the fashion world by storm a decade ago in the aftermath of the attacks in Paris and Brussels. What remains of this mobilizing energy in 2026? And how do these remnants inscribe themselves into history? This new poetry work will be presented by literary top model Marieke Ornelis, herself a writer and dramaturge.
Tim Fraanje provides a fashion commentary to Alessandro Michele’s debut-couture show Valentino Vertigineux (2025), of which a rich selection of video fragments is shown. What can this exorbitant parade teach us about abundance and excess? Luuk Dolfijn joins on the drums.
Romy Day Winkel en Hanka van der Voet honour Amsterdam’s 19th-century seamstresses who formed the first all-female union of the Netherlands, De Naaistersbond. They perform a reading of poems, short stories and call-outs from the union’s newspaper De Naaistersbode, to highlight the radicality of the seamstresses.
rahman QUL presents his new poetry, turning metropolitan Paris – global fashion capital – into an echo chamber for post-Soviet experiences and the stories of marginalized communities that have ended up in Limburg. He shows how people with limited means use fashion to shape their desire for a luxurious, post-capitalist world.
Rainer Diana Hamilton and Violet Spurlock are the writers of the text What does it mean to be well-dressed? in which they explore the idea of fashion as a collective dialogue. In their absence, the audience will perform this polyphonic conversation.
Party line-up:
Tim Fraanje and Luuk Dolfijn go on stage for a second time as music duo Big Hare. They give a demonstration of Solarcore, a danceable method to manifest a magnificent, solar powered future. The performance includes a display of futuristic solarcore costumes made by designer Jonathan Ho.
Tonight Dj V von Willendorf, dj alterego of poet Anne Marijn Voorhorst, crosses as many musical regions and genres as possible – from van baile funk, kuduro and latin core to grime, dancehall, acid house and contemporary trance.
