Ye, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death …
No.
Stop.
There is no valley here,
Nor shadow,
Nor death
That holds a light to that which I see before me –
Tall trees;
Golden light;
Cool, aching breeze against my cheek
That reminds me
Of all the promises
Dropped like leaves
From broken branches
Onto the decaying souls
Of yesterday’s summer
While fresh life springs forth,
Against odds
And autumn’s steady march
Into that cold winter gloom,
High above the world –
Verdant and new
Atop the slender legs of arboreal giants
Who wait for no man
Nor beast,
Nor dark deity painted white,
As they reach
To worship a sun
That regards theirs existence
As the elephant regards the ant.

I wrote this just as before the summer of 2020/2021 in Australia. The summer before had been horrific and this was for all the firefighters (paid and volunteers) and those who lived through the bushfires defending homes, buildings, livestock and loved ones. This summer has been much milder but the fear of another like 2019/2020 hangs over everyone, especially those who live close to fire prone areas.

Bit late in the day here in Oz but just managing to sneak in Day 14 of the #ArtAdventCalendar!

I love sports photography because of shots like this. It is a moment in time captured forever. I think this shot is more powerful than a video of the same play would be.

The poem I’ve chose is related. It’s called “Dragons in the Outfield” and was written based on my experience as a softball mum, a sports coach and an elite athlete.

Fifty years ago today Apollo 17 was headed into space, carrying the last people to walk on the moon.

My poem Walkback Limit is set during that week. While the astronauts prepare to return home, the residents of a small English village hold a lamplit vigil to mark the departure of the last train from their railway station before its closure.

Of all the places I've seen when I travel, Cape Town (and specifically around Camps Bay) felt the most like home: the atmosphere of the town and the climate all reminded me of my little corner of the world. If it weren't so far away I could see myself returning here often.

“As You Wish”

You bade me turn the trees to gold
And set the stream ablaze
So you might bath in riches
Though your dresses are but stitches

You asked for the gentle rustle
Of a thousand fairy wings
Fluttering above your flaxen hair
As you dipped a toe in there

You wished to step through the mirror
And fall into autumnal bliss
That might last a thousand years
And hide your oft cried tears
