Behind the poem: Poems from the Grave is back

It is October and time bring back my Poems from the Grave collection

I don’t know how many poems will be add to it this month. At least couple poems is my plan right now. But I’m bringing it back to only for month of October. It is a little special thing I like to do at Octobers. Last year unfortunately only had time for adding one poem to the collection at Halloween. So this year I try to do better.

I started this special dark poetry collection 2024. It started with one poem I wasn’t sure about thinking it might be too dark to post. But two of my friends loved it and told me to post it. That is how this small poetry collection did start. And the collection name was inspired by another poem from this collection.

First one this year poems will be released tomorrow. And it is actually few years old poem. Originally meant to my Journey of Rose blog on Substack. Which I’m still taking a break from because I focused this blog instead. But couple days ago I went to see were there any finished poems that I haven’t shared. I did find couple poems. Including this one. And did think it is really good fit this poetry collection.

There is one poem I started writing last month that could go two ways and one really dark and perfect fit for this poetry collection. I haven’t finished it yet. And kinda want to write both versions. With poems starting the same but end completely differently. And then label the poems as version 1 and Poems from the Grave version. That is what I have been thinking to do with this poem.

Happy October to everyone! It’s one of my favorite months of the year filled with all things spooky and halloween. That is why I created this little poetry collection to enjoy spooky season even more.

The Opposite of Timeless

More worried
about my morning coffee
getting cold
than the cans of beer
lying in the bottom
of my fridge
like a mausoleum
I have to visit
just to get some mustard.

Another Specimen

I wish I could say the book
was a bestseller
that changed the world,
but it did cost me over 80 bucks
because it’s out of print and the poet’s
legacy kept alive in universities
like a butterfly pinned to a board
made of Styrofoam.

Nostalgia Sonata

Letting Bach help me
realize how 45 years
isn’t that long to a dead man,
and that there’s an equal chance of death
being a music lover or tone deaf,
while those thrift store vinyls cracked
with age in between glasses of whisky
that only exist in my memory now
after you gave up
drinking.

The Romantic Movement Ended Almost 200 Years Ago

A bit jealous of the old composers
justifying their hangovers
with concertos and symphonies,
while I just have this poem
in a time when nonalcoholic beers
prove sensible choices
can also fuel art.

The Long Life of Death

Many of my dreams
are like fossils now-
buried beneath a landscape
that expects some bored painter
to make it timeless
or at least a poet to misspell
its name, but none of it changes
the soil horizons underground,
where a drowned baby mammoth
tried its damnedest at immortality,
yet still failed.

I saw her perform with #neureekie probably about a decade ago and then talk at the Edinburgh Book Festival a couple of years ago and both were inspired. I also love this perfect justification for writing about certain other people - if there's ever a poem about you, you know! 😜🤨

Book Review: Wonder by Chris Emery

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Friday, and it’s time for another review. Today, I am reviewing a collection of poetry by Chris Emery titled Wonder.

Wonder will be published on the 3 November 2025 by Salt Publishing and is 80 pages long.

What It’s About
Wonder is Chris Emery’s fifth collection of poetry. In this one, he takes us along as he explores the very nature of ‘wonder’ in its many guises.

Writing Style
Emery’s writing is accessible yet deeply layered, making this collection appealing to a wide audience—from seasoned poetry enthusiasts to newcomers who are, perhaps, exploring the genre for the first time. The themes of discovery and contemplation are universal, yet Emery’s unique voice ensures each poem feels fresh and deeply personal.

He also provides a wonderful sense of place through his writing. There are times when reading, particularly with ‘The Statue’, ‘Home Song’, and ‘A Single Ticket to the Imagined City’, I could see the locations in my mind; the places seemed so familiar that I felt I might have been there myself. And with the sense of place comes a sense of nostalgia, too. There’s something I can’t quite pinpoint that whisks me back thirty or forty years.

One of the book’s standout features is its rhythmic and lyrical quality, which enhances the overall reading experience and makes it even more captivating when read aloud. Emery’s masterful use of language evokes strong sensory responses, drawing you into an immersive experience. It’s a bit like magic.

The collection’s overall strength lies in Emery’s ability to weave together vivid imagery with profound reflections, creating a tapestry of emotions and intellectual engagement. Each passage acts as a mini meditation, prompting us to pause and consider our perceptions and assumptions about the world and life around us.

Wonder is ultimately a celebration of life’s limitless possibilities and the ongoing pursuit of understanding. Emery invites us into a shared journey filled with moments of quiet revelation and profound appreciation for the everyday miracles that often go unnoticed.

Final Thoughts
Overall, this book is a beautifully composed collection that will enrich and inspire—reminding us of the magic found within reflective contemplation and genuine curiosity. It’s an essential read for anyone seeking deeper connection and meaning in their literary explorations.

I’m giving Wonder an 8/10.
