Okay so why did #FSE and #SPC die? Isn’t #pleroma / #akkoma supposed to be so much better than #Mastodon? Why then couldn’t they run at full capacity indefinitely?
I’m not hating on #rebased BTW, #Poast seems to be doing fine from what little I hear. It’s just funny that I heard so many people over there boasting and bragging about how #pleroma and #akkoma are so much better than #Mastodon because they have more features and run lighter, etc. etc. meanwhile those instances are down now while instances like mstdn.social have been running at full throttle for years now with a pretty similarly sized userbase IIRC

Yep. This has worked for the right before with #NAS, #Poast, #Gleasonator and #Spinster. And on the left I believe #Kolektiva experienced similar success.

@ilovecomputers This is the consequence of marketing the network but not the nodes. For every successful Exodus I've seen on the #Fediverse (including #Gab as well as #Spinster, #Poast, and mstdn.social), people were told "hey, there's this site you can go to that's better than #Twitter". Not a protocol.
This is an unfortunate artifact of how @Gargron has designed #Mastodon, each instance more or less looks the same, there's no branding...they don't look distinguishable from each other so there's been little consideration of the benefits of proper branding.
