Wilson Glacier Falls, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, USA

While I was hiking the Glacier Vista Trail at Mount Rainier last week, I stopped at the viewpoint to photograph Wilson Glacier Falls.

What caught my eye was how the waterfall stood out against the rugged rock and glacier terrain.

It was amazing to see how much water was coming from the glacier, creating a waterfall that drops more than 300 feet toward the lower portion of the Nisqually Glacier.

Fall color across the hillside at Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park.

Wednesday morning at Paradise, fall color covered the hillside in bands of pink, red, gold, and green between the evergreens.

I really liked how the colors seemed to flow across the slope, with the evergreens breaking up the different layers.

Fall at Mount Rainier doesn’t last long, but when the color arrives, it can be spectacular. 🍂📷

I arrived at Tipsoo Lake before sunrise and found Mount Rainier reflected almost perfectly in the calm water.

I photographed this during blue hour, before the warmer alpenglow began to appear. I really liked the cooler tones at this point, along with the grasses in the foreground leading into the reflection.

Tatoosh Range and Mount Adams from Mount Rainier National Park

While hiking above Paradise, I stopped for this view across the Tatoosh Range toward Mount Adams.

I used a longer lens because I liked how it compressed the different mountain ridges together. The softer light and haze helped separate each layer as they faded into the distance. 🏔️📷

While photographing Little Tipsoo Lake on Thursday, I noticed a trail behind the lake and decided to follow it.

A short way up, I found this view with fall color all around the trail, Little Tipsoo Lake below, and Mount Rainier in the distance. I had to sit there for a while and take it all in.

Earlier this month at Reflection Lakes, the morning light began catching the mist along the shoreline.

What caught my attention was the warm light moving through the mist against the darker trees behind it. The mountain wasn't really the subject this time. It was the light and atmosphere along the lake that made me stop and take this photo.

It was a beautiful way to start the morning.

Morning light on Mount Rainier

While photographing Mount Rainier last week, I noticed the first morning light beginning to reach the upper mountain above the dark forest below.

I liked the contrast between the bright snow and rock on Rainier and the layers of trees beneath it. The forest really helps show just how massive the mountain is from this viewpoint.

One of those scenes that made me stop and take a closer look. 📷

Early fall at Mount Rainier, Washington

Wednesday morning on the south side of Mount Rainier, I found one of the first strong patches of fall color I’ve seen this year.

What caught my eye was how the red and orange foliage covered the hillside, standing out against the green evergreens behind it. 🍂

Rushing water through moss-covered rocks.

While I was at Sol Duc Falls in Olympic National Park, I spent some time looking for smaller scenes away from the main waterfall.

What caught my eye here was the contrast between the fast-moving water and the dark rocks with green moss growing along the edges.

Sometimes the details away from the main waterfall are just as interesting. 🌿

Last month, while I was walking near Sol Duc Falls in Olympic National Park, the sunlight filtering through the forest caught my eye.

Yesterday at Union River Wildlife Area near Belfair, Washington, I watched this small flock of sandpipers take off and fly back and forth across the water.

What really caught my eye was how they all turned together. As they banked, the white underside of their feathers suddenly flashed into view, then disappeared again as they turned back.

I was surprised by how the whole flock seemed to turn white for just a moment. It was fascinating to watch.

While I was at Bench Lake earlier this week, I spent some time along the shoreline watching Mount Rainier and the reflections across the water.

I really liked how the rocks, old log, trees, lake, and mountain all came together in this view. It was one of those places where I was happy to just slow down, look around, and enjoy being there.

This moss-covered branch caught my eye while I was walking the Sol Duc Falls trail.

I liked how it curved through the forest and almost formed an arch over all the green below. I had to stop for a photo. 🌲📷

I hiked up to Bench Lake at Mount Rainier National Park on Tuesday evening. It was fairly cloudy and hazy when I got there, and the lake still had a lot of waves, so I was wondering if I had made the trip for nothing.

But between 7 and 8 pm as the sun set, the clouds cleared, the wind calmed down, the lake went completely flat. That is when this beautiful reflection of Mount Rainier appeared, with just a slight alpenglow on the mountain and in the water.

It was absolutely delightful to watch it all come together.

The contrast is what I liked most about this view.
