Im Januar moderierte unser @tibosl -Kollege @Lambo einen Roundtable von #KuWiki und @wikimediaDE über die Rückgabe von Objekten kolonialer Herkunft, mit Perspektiven von #Provenienzforschung & #Wikiversum.

And we made it just in time for #LoveDataWeek – our post reflecting on the #plw2024 workshop / barcamp at WMDE HQ in Jan is up on the TIB blog:
We had a session dedicated to #Wikibase (of course) and got valuable feedback from the community of art historians, provenance researchers, museum professionals and data enthusiasts regarding missing features and missing perspectives when considering Wikibase as a viable collection management system that is able to complete with/ replace proprietary systems.

After #plw2024 I've found my #provenance rabbit hole - linking #wikidata items of people related to Achim's #loviscorinth #paintings - collectors, gallery owners ... a world of family connections! That said, you inevitably also add one Holocaust victim after another and learn more about them. Some information only exists because of #terezin #ushmm & other databases. Still hoping to find an unidentified collector so I can do my part to give a person a face – not just the "Holocaust victim" label.

@Lambo presenting the summary from the #plw2024 session on "Wikibase as collection management system from museums". The session gathered missing features that are "must-have" for convincing museum use cases. We also covered what needs to be done in terms of improving showcases and how to get started / what is needed in order to not just run a wiki in-house, but take advantage of its full potential. Notes from the session will be made public on the kuwiki site & I'll try to thread the key ones below here.

Yann LeGall (TU Berlin) presenting his research on German colonial plunder campaigns (part of project "The Restitution of Knowledge") at #plw2024 workshop @wikimediaDE.
The mapping presents a staggering view of the sheer amount of campaigns over a short period of time in late 18th c (ca. 3 decades). But the mapping is the starting point, Yann discussed how creating the structured database(s) behind it presents a whole range of challenges in terms of vocab (looters vs collectors) and perspectives on events (perspectives of the colonialists vs local populations, so military campaigns vs e.g. local resistance movements). Modeling ownership data vs events that result in change of ownership on Wikidata is a further issue that seems currently not entirely fit for purpose (provenance of looted objects is not necessarily the same as provenance of conventional art objects, or is it?).
