Musical Interlude: I spent most of the day hanging at my house, waiting for a plumber to come...only to call them and find out that they have me scheduled for TOMORROW. Sigh. I could only laugh; it's not worth getting upset over.

But while I kept going to the window every time I heard a car stopping, I remembered a sketch from the Tracy Ullman show where she's waiting for a repairman to show up, and singing this song....

I saw covering it with insulation may present a fire hazard, it is uncovered. I saw it should not cross itself. I have a long coil of surplus. Can I bury it for a heat source for the geckos and miss snake and maybe stray kitties, or is that a fire hazard so I should look up the instructions for cutting and covering with tape to end it? Mostly clay in the dirt.

Right, after waiting for 3 hours & a bit & being frelling hungry for the last half (it's 19:07 now) & I'm done waiting for the plumber to fix / look at the leak problem I've got.

Not happy & will probably fume in a bit.
First remove shoes & I can finally get changed into my loafing gear. That accomplished, I'm launching into my, "leave me the frell alone, unless you're on Mastodon or a critter of my imagination that's chill" mode. Oh, & stuffing my face with tea, micro-ready meal to the rescue!

But these plumbers are brothers and grew up nearby and are part of a local company owned by the son of the guy who started it many years ago.

And the price shocked me at how low it was. Downright reasonable.

I told them they were going to make me cry and they laughed and said they’re not out to screw people just do some good work.

They’re coming back Friday to do a bunch more now.

Incredibly grateful.

Spanish #plumbers almost exploded the whole house and themselves today.

They were installing two replacement expansion vessels (white containers) in the photo. They had a very ill-conceived theory that the expansion vessels had broken because hot water flowed back from the very powerful three-phase current water heater. That wasn't the reason; they broke the vessels themselves with water pressure. Anyways.

They installed a reverse flow check valve on the position marked with a red line, to prevent hot water from flowing to the expansion vessels.

This not only prevents the expanding water from going into the expansion vessels, but also to the emergency overpressure valve.

The expansion vessels are there, as is standard, to support the water heater, by flexibly allowing the water to expand when it's heated.

They also closed down the valve on top of the water heater.

High school physics question: What happens to water which is heated in a closed container? It makes essentially a huge pipe bomb.

Luckily I noticed their errors and got them to remove the extra valve. They again left without opening the top valve, which if I hadn't noticed, would have broken the expansion vessels once again, the same way they broke them the last time...

Having a reliable plumber is one of life's comforts. My regular plumber for decades retired a half-dozen years ago, and I went through three or four disappointing plumbers after that. (Poor work, often breaking some of my aging plumbing and compounding the problem).

Finally hit upon an excellent plumber, who has come to the rescue three times in the past couple of years. He is now my regular plumber. Today, I told him "Don't you retire on me!" He chuckled and promised not to.

When you've got a houseful of aging plumbing, you need someone to treat it gently and know how to fix it without hurting it. So today, let us remember to be grateful for good plumbers!

Weird #plumbing issue. In warm weather, our toilet and drains sound hollow, gurgles, etc, when flushing or draining, like when the tub is drained. In the cold months, it is fine. Last year we had the system snaked 100%. No clogs–been an issue since we bought house in 2019.

I am thinking the warm weather, wind, etc is causing negative air pressure through the main roof plumbing vent

If you're fascinated with pipes and looking for a career, Canada’s Job Bank reports that PEI, Nova Scotia, and the Yukon are looking for plumbers. Overall plumbers will be in demand due to a focus on home building.
