In 1821, Henry De la Beche and William Conybeare name a fragmentary fossil Plesiosaurus.
In December 1823, Mary Anning finds relatively complete fossil of Plesiosaurus.
In 1824, Conybeare used Annings fossil as the Type species, since it was far more complete than his originals.
For many years additional fossils were found in the Lias Group until the cessation of quarrying activities in the Lias Group, early in the 20th century.

That's not a skeleton of Plesiosaurus on the Plesiosaurus spread, though, it's clearly based on a skeleton of Rhomaleosaurus from Yorkshire (the one I did my PhD on, so there). And there's also something very odd going on with its anatomy.

Found in 1821, and named "near to" "lizard" by Henry De la Beche and William Conybeare. This is because it more reptile like than Ichthyosaurus, another marine reptile that had been found only a couple years earlier.
Plesiosaurus was a 3 meter long marine reptile from the Early Jurassic.
An almost complete fossil was later discovered by the legendary #Mary #Anning in 1823. This fossil is still on display in the Natural History Museum London.

Thanks to a surprise delivery from @dave_hone I now have a blue Toyway #Plesiosaurus toy in addition to the green version I already had. This 1970s toy always reminded me of a specific illustration by paleoartist Neave Parker, which I suspect was the ‘inspiration’. The sculpt was originally released under the brand Dinocrats.
