  1. While I was still working on the #AIAct, #PLD and coordinating on #CRA, my EP colleagues and I made sure the legislator understood the specific needs #OpenSource development and business models have. For example, the collaborative development of software on public platforms could be read as commercial acting, as making available or placing a product on the market. The #NLF revision has the opportunity of taking this into account for future regulation. 🧵 (1/3)

  2. Suspiciuously cheap ATF1508 from eBay have arrived. And they indeed _are_ ATF1508, and they work (at least the one I tried does).

    Who would have thought?

  4. Can, should the #EU step in with filling the gap left behind by #MITRE & #CVE ?

Sure: this is clearly for the public good, and plays nicely with the work on #CRA #PLD #NIS2 etc.

A key problem is the sheer velocity: destruction via tyranny&fascism is fast, building up structures via democratic processes relatively slow.

The EU needs a Fast Track Program to respond to the chaos of the US. The time is ... yesterday.

  5. Even the best of us can fall for phish.

    troyhunt.com/a-sneaky-phish-ju

That should not happen, but it does because:

    1. All tech nowadays is so unreliable that when the password manager fails to auto-fill, it's not a strong enough signal that something is really wrong. It's just another day and another piece of tech which does not work reliably so we just get conditioned to work around it.
    2. Designers rule the game, and they want clean interfaces over anything that might look cluttered even if that means hiding one of the few reliable signals. We spent years and millions to implement SPF, DKIM and DMARC only for the App designers to go "naah the sending domain doesn't look good on my canva, let's just show the user-provided name that has zero validation instead as the canonical From".
    3. We are all humans, humans make mistakes and we make more mistakes when tired, stressed or otherwise not able to fully focus on something.

So, do we just give up? Sadly that is not a option.

So I think we need to

1 and 2. Demand better tech. The EU product (inc software) liability directive is far from perfect and might end up just enriching lawyers, but at least it's an attempt to make software makers liable for when their software causes harm.

    1. Accept that everyone will do mistakes and design for it. In this case Mailchimp should have done another 2FA or email validation prompt for rare but "high impact" stuff like exporting the mailing list.

    Also #Passkeys

Thanks @troyhunt for being open and transparent about this. I'll add it to my list of examples showing experts getting phished that I like to refer to every time someone says "the user should have known better".

  6. People of the Fediverse, I need your help!

To my knowledge, re-creations of the CAS PLD (PAL20L8) floating around the net are not completely functional (some memory combinations are not working), so I started fiddling around with the equations to fix them, testing the results on my clone and with the help of @DosFox

The end result is a CAS that seems to support all memory combinations, but, while working perfectly for me, kills the audio on DosFox's clone!

So, anyone with a Plus, willing to try the PLD and tell us what happens on their machine?

    Boosts appreciated for reach!

  7. Someone dropped a massive (500GB) blob of 1990s IBM warez on Archive.org. It included some #InteractiveUnix releases I hadn't previously seen. Also versions of dBase, Lotus 123, Wordperfect ... and Microsoft Word 5 for UNIX!

Plus #FPGA and #PLD development software for AT&T's ORCA - and Neocad's FPGA Foundry, which is the base Xilinx ISE was built on.

  8. In a discussion of the Product Liability Directive covering software as well in the future, a few folks started talking about how this doesn't make sense because formal verification of software is basically a non-starter - and then a few countered this with saying it could be done.

Both sides there are really missing the point by a mile.

It's about business risk ("good enough to ship") and I very much approve of this happening. It's been way too long.

  9. @neptune22222 @jeffluszcz

This is what, in Europe, will change with the #CRA (cyber resilience act) and #PLD (product liability directive) and, I suppose, is already under the #DMA (digital market act).

  12. No więc wrzucam nową wersją paczki, i testy padają z podejrzanymi błędami na porównywaniu znaczników czasu. Robię więc coś oczywistego, i ustawiam TZ=UTC. Testy nadal padają. Liczę sobie szybko… wychodzi różnica 8 godzin, dziwne.

Klonuję repo, żeby spróbować powtórzyć problem przed zgłoszeniem. Sprawdzam, jak autorzy uruchamiają testy, i znajduję następujący komentarz:

    # system should be in "America/Los_Angeles" timezone for all tests to pass

No dobra. I teraz zakład: kloczek już zgłosił padające testy, nie wysilając się, żeby rozkminić, co może być nie tak. Oczywiście, że to zrobił:

  13. So I'm bumping a package and the test suite fails with suspicious timestamp-related failures. So I do the obvious thing, and set TZ=UTC. It still fails. I do a quick math, and the timestamp difference looks weird — 8 hours.

I clone the repo to try to reproduce the problem. While that, I check how upstream runs tests and notice a comment:

    # system should be in "America/Los_Angeles" timezone for all tests to pass

Well, okay. Then I make a bet that kloczek has already filed a bug about tests passing without actually bothering to try to figure it out. Of course he did:

  16. Is anyone aware of something easily available capable of reading (don't care about programming for now) #PLS153 / 82S153 #PLD devices?
These are combinatorial programmable logic devices and don't support protection, but I can't find a modern programmer to read them. I also can't see them mentioned in the #RCT page.

I can design my hardware to bruteforce them, but really, I'd like to avoid if possible.

  17. With today's votes on #CRA and #PLD on the introduction of liability rules for software, a broad exception for #FreeSoftware was made, so that after long and intense debates individual developers and non for profit work are safeguarded.

  21. The #FOSDEM panels on the #CRA and #PLD underlined the divide between policy-makers and #OpenSource devs.

To bridge that divide, I think policy-makers have to work to make the #EU more accessible, which is why I decided to launch unfsckthe.eu/, a collaborative knowledge-base that will provide documentation for the EU, and help make it easier for the open source community to get their voices heard in #Brussels
