  1. Why I gave the world wide web away for free, Tim Berners-Lee

"I gave the world wide web away for free because I thought that it would only work if it worked for everyone. Today, I believe that to be truer than ever. Regulation and global governance are technically feasible, but reliant on political willpower. If we are able to muster it, we have the chance to restore the web as a tool for collaboration, creativity and compassion across cultural borders. We can re-empower individuals, and take the web back. It’s not too late."

  3. Another opportunity for a platform cooperative...

"Menulog said New Zealand represents a small part of its business, and this small size was insufficient to maintain a healthy business in the market.

Its website and app will no longer be operational from the 16 May."

  5. Part of the anxiety over #Threads/ #Meta is a feeling of lack of possible ownership - that unaccountable admins will defederate and there’s nothing you can do about it.
We don’t have to live that way! User-owned, democratically managed instances exist (the #PlatformCooperative model).

We don’t have to be helpless content generators if we #SeizeTheMeansOfCommunity.

  6. There was an organization offering free schedules / meetings about starting (platform) cooperatives here, in the past 6 weeks or so. Can anybody help me remember the group, or point me to it?

I think they were UK based?

I wish there was a streaming service run by a platform cooperative, featuring lots of CC-licensed video works, and sharing the proceeds with creators. I would pay a monthly membership for that.

  10. What would help at this point is indications of interest.

    * Would you or your organisation pay a cooperative to host a Mastodon server? Do you know of anyone else who might?

    * Would you pay a premium to have it hosted onshore in Aotearoa (which will cost us significantly more at this stage)?

    * Would you or your organisation pay a cooperative for training and support so you can self-host or community-host your own servers?

Even better yet, form #Association|s and #PlatformCooperative|s to run #Fediverse instances, and setup instances at already existing associations and #cooperative|s.

When establishing a #coop in #Europe, prefer the form of a #EuropeanCooperative (#SCE), and avoid to make your #headquarters in #FRG, because its #CooperativeLaw still contains inhibiting #Nazi regulations from #Y1934.

  14. There are two sides to the movement to replace corporate DataFarming platforms with user-centric communication networks. One is the cluster of technologists working on decentralized software and running servers. This side is often more easily visible. But just as important is the #PlatformCooperative movement, organizing to make this tech sustainably accessible to more people, especially those facing structural and economic barriers to participation:

You've raised a valid concern. You're right that there's no simple solution to providing the Global South with user-respecting digital tech. But I don't think it's any more ethical to support them being datafarmed forever by corporate platforms. I think the strategy of the #PlatformCooperative movement is probably the most viable long term solution. In the early days of electrification, creating co-ops is how relatively poor, rural people in the UD provided themselves with power lines.

  17. I was just looking up prices for hosting a Mastodon server on masto.host (from $6/month) and I saw that they're so flooded with new customers they've had to close new registrations while they catch up. Now I'm wondering what it would take to set up a similar hosting service as a #PlatformCooperative based in Aotearoa, with onshore hosting options.

  18. Does anyone know if Resonate, the music streaming co-op, is still going? The last blog piece on their site was posted just over a year ago:

  19. "We are a core developer of the Cosmos Network, where we focus on sovereign, interoperable technologies for more sustainable communities. We believe that system scaling is as much a social problem as it is a technical one, and that fixing the exploitative monetization of the internet may require a renewed understanding of money itself."

  20. Perhaps patient capital could be a way to start more user-owned co-ops for media services - both broadcast ("news") and networked ("social")? Co-ops have been working in one or the other for decades (eg New Internationalist and Positive News, Loomio and Meet.coop). But what about cooperatives that deliver both information and tech to owner-members, with the tech business cross-subsidizing the work of journalists?
