Now, parish lawsuits, including one in front of the Supreme Court, could make oil giants pay to restore the state’s vanishing marshes.

Excerpt: "Now, one of those cases is under consideration by the US Supreme Court. Last year, a state court jury found #Chevron liable in a lawsuit brought by #PlaqueminesParish, one of more than 40 parish lawsuits accusing oil companies of failing to secure permits for their operations and neglecting to clean up the damage they left behind in violation of state coastal management law. After the landmark verdict requiring Chevron to spend $745 million to restore the coast, the company appealed the case to the Supreme Court, which heard arguments in January.

"In light of the industry’s successful lobbying for legislation limiting landowners’ lawsuits, parish lawsuits are an especially crucial avenue to hold the companies accountable, some local attorneys say. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the parishes and they continue to win their cases in state courts, they could make Chevron, #Exxon, #BP, #Shell, and other oil companies pay billions of dollars to help fund coastal restoration efforts as the state runs out of resources to support cleanup. "

#Louisiana has lost about 2,000 square miles of land to #coastal #erosion since the 1930s—a land mass about the size of Delaware.

#PlaqueminesParish, the state’s southernmost parish, juts into the water where the #MississippiRiver meets the #GulfOfMexico. The parish, which is crisscrossed with #oil & #gas canals, has already lost nearly half of its size in the last century as #SeaLevels rise because of #ClimateChange.

#Trump’s #DOJ & #Louisiana’s AG have worked to end older #desegregation cases they claim are no longer needed. In April, they lifted a 1965 order in LA’s #PlaqueminesParish.

#Concordia’s filing says the orders interfere with local control.

In July, the #NAACP Legal Defense Fund filed a brief arguing that there is “significant evidence that vestiges of #discrimination continue to harm #Black #students” in Concordia’s #schools.

Third photo is the old Harlem Plantation House. Built 1840, on the National Register, but derelict since the Federal Flood in 2005. Good to see it hasn't totally collapsed yet, I guess. Here it is in 2009.

Interesting to see that the Plaquemines Parish Courthouse ruins look to have been stabilized and can be entered. I was last there in 2012, and it was still partly ruined and fenced off.

Also I see they replaced the clock in the clocktower - was it running?
