I almost didn’t dare, but I did it: harvesting the chillies! 🌶️

It’s a small harvest because I really want to leave the chillies on the plants for as long as possible and only pick the ones that are truly ripe.

Curious to see how they’ll taste! 😊

I got these seeds in a swap from a friend in Germany. The envelope was labelled “Buschpfeffer”.

Fingers crossed I didn’t plant them too early—weather forecast says it'll drop to 9°C the coming nights!

New sleeproom mates 🌱
Today I welcomed three new chili plants (Sibirian house pepper) into my home. Since the living room is already taken over by lemon drops, dragon breath, and UFO chilies, these little guys earned a spot in my bedroom.
Falling asleep and waking up surrounded by these beautiful plants… not a bad vibe at all.

🌶️ Same age, totally different!
One lemon drop chilli in a pot outside —10 chillies, 2 ripe.
One in the greenhouse —bushy with 30 chillies, none ripe yet! Hope they ripen before it gets too cold!

Already dreaming of next year's grow, greenhouse might be the way to go! 🌱

The lemon drop chillies have officially moved into the community greenhouse — and they're thriving! 🌶️

But with the heat in there, the soil dries out super fast. To keep the moisture in, I mulched the ground with organic straw from a nearby community farm. 🌾

Fingers crossed it does the trick! 🤞

🌶️ First harvest of the year!
I picked these tiny habanero chillies from my two-year-old plant. I didn’t give them much attention this season, so they stayed small — but they still pack a punch! 😅
I accidentally snapped a branch (oops!), and after a few days in a glass of water, the chillies turned red while the leaves wilted.

@gardening @homegrownfood And for those who think this is late for sowing, you're absolutely right. I had to focus all my attention on my Habaneros and UFO chillies in the first weeks of the year, since I overwintered them successfully.

Now is the perfect time for the new ones, and they will be just fine as they can move to a community greenhouse in a couple of weeks.

Chilli Survivors 🌶️
Tried to overwinter my chilli plants this year—kind of a test run. I left one group outside (winters are usually mild here) and brought another group indoors. Sadly, the outdoor ones didn’t make it, but 8 out of 13 indoor plants are thriving with new leaves already! 🌱

Lessons learned:
-Keep them indoors.
-A sunny spot is best.
-Pruning is totally fine.
-Check for pests regularly.

Dit jaar heb ik trouwens van een kennis ook Lemon Drop zaadjes. Een andere vriend heeft nog Black Heart Chili zaadjes voor me geregeld.
En natuurlijk ga ik mijn eigen Habanero en UFO zaadjes zaaien.

Helaas heb ik maar plek voor vier soorten, dus daar moet ik het bij houden. 🌶🌶🌶🌶

Guess what! I harvested another 400g of gorgeous habanero chillies today. I put them in the oven at 60° for 10 hours to dry them out. I'd already pickled the first batch (also 400g) in oil, and they were so good!

I'd absolutely love to hear any great ideas or recipes on how to make a large quantity of chillies keepable.

Summer rain can be beautiful. I hope the chilly plants like it too. I have put all the plants outside. Unfortunately some of the plants have lice. I hope the rain will wash them off.
