  1. How #Guatemala, #Mexico, and #Belize plan to protect 14 million acres of #Mayan #forest

Mexico, Guatemala and Belize have announced plans to create a huge reserve of tropical forest spanning across the three countries. Pushing out criminal gangs and protecting the land from ranchers, miners and loggers won’t be easy.

    Aug. 21, 2025

Excerpt: "One proposal from Mexico is the expansion of its '#PlantingLife' program, which offers landowners money to grow certain kinds of trees either for fruit or timber. The program has a $2 billion budget, Bárcena said.

"But the program, which dates to ex-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has faced criticism. In 2021, the World Resources Institute reported that it had actually incentivized deforestation in Campeche state. Bárcena said the program is being adjusted to better meet environmental objectives.

"Mexican sustainability and climate action expert Juan Carlos Franco, who works in southern Mexico, said security is crucial and requires the government to act as 'guarantor.' But the work has to be carried out with civil society in the local communities, including in places where locals have found ways to coexist with the illegal activity surrounding them, he said.

" 'Communities oriented toward the #biocultural management of the territory can overcome despite the crime, that’s the most revealing message,' he said.

    No #megaprojects

"Another challenge will be holding governments over the long term to commitments to forgo big projects that promise economic development but threaten #EnvironmentalDamage, such as Mexico’s tourist rail operation, the Maya Train, which Belize is interested in extending to its territory.

"Orantes, the Guatemala minister, said that Guatemalan President #BernardoArévalo would not allow megaprojects in the reserve because when access is opened in the forest it becomes difficult to control everything that follows.

"Arévalo recently declined to renew the contract of a #petroleum company that had been operating for 40 years in a Guatemalan reserve known as the #MayaBiosphere.

"Guatemala is making the largest land contribution to the reserve, encompassing 27 existing protected areas. Arévalo had already made clear that he would not run an extension of the Maya Train proposed by Mexico’s last president through protected areas.

"In Mexico, Bárcena noted that the 950-mile (1,500-kilometer) train line, which started running in late 2023 and goes in a rough loop around the Yucatan Peninsula, lies outside the new reserve’s territory.
She said her agency was working to alleviate some of the environmental impacts of the train line, in collaboration with companies operated by the Mexican Army, which built a large portion of the rail line and operates the train.

"To avoid destructive projects in the new reserve, the three governments agreed to create a council made up of environmental authorities, as well as an #Indigenous advisory council, Bárcena said. Any proposed projects in the reserve would have to pass through them."

  2. Planting Life in a Dying City (Kolchais, E1: the Fog)

Kolchais trudged through the market, doing eir best to ignore the thudding pain accompanying each step, each breath. Ey couldn't take day work like Lefeng and Tsouchm, could barely help clear the debris and prepar the ground to build their new home.

But ey could do this. Little as it was...

  3. "Lefeng thought a minute, then said, "Let us see how the day goes." "

    Got 1200 words. Here's today's last line.

  4. "So ey was not surprised to see nothing but a simple palisade and a gate across the road."

1000 words today (plus a bit). Here's the last line I added.

  5. I (in theory) should have a full hour and a half for writing today. Normally my goal for today would be ~1500 words, but I'm in an annoying writing stage where there is very little steady writing going on.

I guess I'm hoping for 700 words. Fingers crossed....

  6. Someone (another autistic author, I think), said something recently (I think on birdsite) about how *accurate* autistic perspective in books never gains success or acclaim the way neurotypical ideas of autistic characters do. See, allistic people aren't comfortable with a real autistic PoV. It is strange and disturbing to them. So they reject it.

And I've been thinking about that a lot, because one of my PoV characters in #PlantingLife is autistic.

  7. Finished edits on #PolyamAndKink

Going by prior experience, I should be able to put one day a week into formatting/book design and still have it finished a month+ before the publication date.

Go going forward putting most of my focus on getting caught up on #PlantingLife fantasy novel.

Chotaikytsai is done with this shit.

  9. Got some DSharp playing and going to try to get some writing done. I think (fingers crossed!) that I'll be able to #PlantingLife done on schedule, which means my goal of publishing two books a year going forward will probably work long term.

Because if I can get it done THIS year....

Well, I'm not going to tempt Murphy, but it's, well, this year, you know?

  10. #FediWorlds day 9

There are two or three ways to become family-less: to not be accepted into any marriage group, to be born to a family-less Cenn, or to be the last of a family that dies out.

That last is a grey area, technically family-last and not family-less, but they are often treated as such, especially in cities where a single person simply can't fulfill the many political and economic expectations placed on a family.

    #WIPWorldBuilders 2/? #PlantingLife

  11. Playing catch up -- #FediWorlds day 9

"How are outcasts treated in your world? How's one become one?"

Most outcasts are family-less, people who don't belong to a family.

This is mostly a problem in the cities, as in rural areas a group of family-less can come together to create a new family any time they choose to. So in rural areas the only family-less are generally people no one wants to be with.

    #WIPWorldBuilders 1/? #PlantingLife

  12. #FediWorlds Day 5

And if a group of people wanted to create a new family, they just did it.

As cities developed, a families specialized more to the point that each family eventually was defined by the trade it practiced. And the nature of the restricted space in cities and the developing city governments meant families needed to city approval to become residents of the city. In time this evolved to needing city approval to form a new family.

  13. #FediWorlds Day 5

    "How have family relationships
    changed over time?"

The two big changes have been the family is tied to trade and the difficulty in creating new families. These changes are connected to each other and to the rise of large towns and cities.

Among nomadic families and in small villages, a family might be known for a certain speciality or focus -- this family has a special way of dying clothing, that family prefers deep sea fishing, etc.

    #WorldBuilding #plantinglife

  14. #FediWorlds Day 4

"Do people form groups with people that are their same age or not?"

Sort of yes. The main social group for everyone except priests is the marriage group. A marriage group needs to be from the same generation, and ideally across a smaller age range. 10 years is considered ideal. So not the exact same age, but within the same age range.

    #WorldBuilding #plantinglife

  15. D2 & D3 #WIPWorldBuilders
What methods are used for scientific discoveries (ex: empirical method)? How is it viewed

Science as-such doesn't exist yet. Philosopher-types usually become priests and experimental folks fiddle within their families. Fiddling is usually encouraged, though this varies by family.

Philosopher-priests are given a great deal of respect within the priesthood, by rarely hold high rank. They tend to be left to do their own thing.

    #WorldBuilding #plantinglife

  16. Smaller marriage groups are usually more cohesive with everyone cheerleading everyone else.

    #FediWorlds #WorldBuilding #plantinglife

  17. #FediWorlds Day 2
"Who's expected to be someone's cheerleader? Their partner? Parent?"

A grandparent takes primary responsibility for each kid from the time they start crawling. This grandparent, their 'Baba' or 'Papa', is their main cheerleader until they are married or the Baba dies.

Within a large marriage group (7+), it's common & expected for individuals to form stronger pair bonds within the group, and those they bond closely with are their cheerleaders.

"How is music categorized (ex: country, rock and roll, folk)?"

The two main categories are instrumental (only from musician families and some priests) and vocal.

Vocal is further split into private family music and street music.

Street music is the music of the family-less. Both instrumental music and street music can be found among the buskers of a city, but the street musicians lack 'respectability'

    "Are there national anthems?"

No. Closest that exist is some families have a song that might be called a family anthem. This is especially common among the farwalkers and remaining boat people. At farwalker gatherings each family will sing their own song as part of the opening and closing ritual of the gathering, one of the few times family songs are shared publicly.

"Has a certain kind of music ever been banned/outlawed?"

Nope. No one has the power and no one would have seen the point. What vocal music people sing among their families is private and like all family things, no one else's business. Instrumental music is rare enough to be valued in all forms.

  24. Planting Life in a Dying City Preview

A lot has been happening and I really should do a family or farm post, but I just don't have the spoons. So instead, you are getting to see the first chapter of my bronze age low fantasy novel Planting Life in a Dying City. This is still a draft, so expect typos, misspellings, etc.

  28. I don't know why, but I have kids songs on the brain today. So I'm working on #PlantingLife to the tune of 'If all the rain drops' and 'Itsy bittsy spider."

  29. So, slight change of plans. Before I can dive back into *writing* #PlantingLife , I need to get the timeline sorted out.

This is the first time I've written a story where the weather was a significant factor in the storyline. So knowing what season it is (and therefore when a storm is likely to happen) is kind of important.

Storyline and other worldbuilding stuff is available to $10 Patrons.

Having some thoughts about some foreshadowing in #PlantingLife . I think i'm going to spend sometime reviewing that today, Especially as I'm making good progress on my #PolyamAndKink check list.
