Subbacultcha presents: Milkweed

Encounter the slacker-trad folklore of Milkweed’s formula of existing source material, cut up words, and lo-fi and experimental sound productions, this October at Dokzaal.
Milkweed describe their sound as slacker-trad, which is both true and somehow insufficient. For three years Milkweed have refined a formula – taking existing source material (a folklore journal, a book on Welsh myths, another on bronze age human remains and most recently Thomas Kinsella’s masterfully stark translation of the Táin Bó Cúailnge), cutting up the words and feeding them through a woodchipper of lo-fi production and experimental folk music.
On the face of it their musical concerns are transatlantic – they follow the rich creative line that runs between British traditional music and the songs and tunes of the eastern United States. In reality their scope is global, and rooted in deep time, with influences from prehistory bleeding into a troubled and troubling modern era. As a result their music doesn’t sit easily anywhere, but ricochets between bewitching folk music and disconcerting hauntological experimentation.

On October 31st, Nour Foundation and Fragments of Palestine are organizing a special day in solidarity with the people of Palestine — from Gaza, the West Bank and the Palestinian diaspora.
A day filled with culture, dance, music, food and meeting one another, alongside an indoor market where authentic Palestinian products and goods will be available for sale.
Through this day, we want to show our solidarity with the people of Palestine, while also supporting those here who share their voices, talents and stories. We bring together culture, stories and talent, while creating a space to meet, connect, share and celebrate.
Together, we acknowledge what is happening there, but above all, we stand alongside the people affected, here and there.

14:00 — Market Opening
The afternoon begins with Nour el-Nono, founder of the Nour Foundation, opening our Palestinian market. Browse authentic products from the West Bank, including olive oil, dates, and ceramics from Fairtrade Palestine, alongside handmade accessories by Mary Ann Jaraisy. Get henna painting by Tahiera & Nazierah, and let your children enjoy our Kids Corner, where they can make bracelets, paint, and learn about Palestinian culture.
A short video will be shown during the market, highlighting the Nour Foundation’s ongoing projects on the ground in Gaza.
Also a small photo exhibition (from private collection of Nour el-Nono and her family) highliting the differences of their life before and after the year 2023.
14:30–16:30 — Music & Shopping
DJ Shadow spins Arabic music while you shop, browse the market, and enjoy drinks at the bar.
16:30-16:50 — Stand-up comedy performance
Faris Abusada is a Palestinian comedian living in Amsterdam. Hailing from Bethlehem, his comedy blends personal experiences with cultural and political insights, offering a unique perspective on Palestinian life. Known for addressing family expectations, cultural identity, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Faris brings both humor and thoughtfulness to his performances, bridging cultural gaps and shedding light on important issues.
17:30–18:30 — Dabke Performance & Workshop
Watch a live demonstration of dabke, traditional Middle Eastern dance, followed by an interactive workshop led by Dabke Night — all welcome to join in.
19:00 — Palestinian Dinner
The evening closes with a traditional Palestinian dinner, prepared and served by Chef Nour, accompanied by music.
All market proceeds go directly to individual families and community projects in Gaza and the Occupied Territories. Proceeds from the dinner and pick-up boxes support Nour Foundation’s work with Gaza’s most vulnerable communities.

Nour Foundation (BE) and Stichting Fragments of Palestine (NL) were founded by Nour el-Nono and Lenka Pollak in 2025 after working together on ground projects in Gaza.
Nour Foundation relies entirely on donations raised through events like this, with 100% of all contributions going directly to Gaza, ensuring that support reaches families and communities who need it the most.
Stichting Fragments of Palestine works closely with Nour Foundation and supports projects in Gaza, but also Palestinians living in diaspora. We generate funds by selling Palestine Drinks (@palestinedrinks) en other related products, like merchandise.

💸 Fundraiser for racialised queer people currently in the asylum process
This short film screening brings together researchers, activists, and organisers working on migration in the Netherlands to ask what Dutch migrant justice organising can learn from the UK’s experience confronting surveillance-based immigration enforcement. The conversation comes at a critical moment. In the Netherlands, the legal and political terrain around migration is shifting fast, from updates to migration law and the EU’s deportation regulations, to the deteriorating situation at AZCs and Ter Apel, to the expanding role of surveillance technology in migration control. Drawing connections to the UK context we want to explore what strategies, tactics, coalitions, and research approaches can travel across borders, and what’s specifically needed to build and strengthen the movement here.

**20:00 — Screening NO RELEASE** As a starting point for this conversation, we’ll screen NO RELEASE (~15 min). It is a short film based on research by Monish Bhatia into the use of GPS surveillance in the UK immigration system. The film follows two migrant men who, after release from prison, face a new form of punishment: continuous electronic monitoring. Produced by BÉZNĂ Theatre and directed by Sînziana Cojocărescu, it offers a visceral entry point into the human cost of these systems to ground the evening’s broader discussion in the lived realities they’re meant to address.
**20:30 — Discussion** The screening will be followed by a panel as well as open discussion with everyone present. Speakers include film makers Monish Bhatia and Sînziana Cojocărescu as well as organisers and academics on migratant justice in the Dutch context.

On May 30, Local Gr0up & Ganok are taking over Plantage Dokhuis for a full-day fundraising art market for Ukraine.
From 13:00 onwards, Dokzaal will host a curated market with 30+ independent artists, designers and local brands, alongside film screening, hair workshop, music performances and an exposition throughout the day.
Ukrainian vegan food by Monday Kitchen collective (Ukraine/Berlin) will be served all day in the café area, with a special dinner menu between 18:00–20:00 🌞

15:30–16:30 “Landslide” screening by Oleksii Radynski + panel discussion about unconventional art spaces.
