Funny thing: a couple of hours ago, I started to investigate whether or not I should buy a #BambuLab printer despite its #cloud dependency in case you want a nice UX.
However, this new development let me cancel my plans for now as of the high risk of losing over 1000€ for an expensive future brick.

A few photos from this morning's dog walk, before the bike ride, and the camera which all of today's photos were taken with: A Kodak Z712IS from 2007.
I quite like the camera, but it's now been made obsolete because its software doesn't allow the date to be set past the end of 2025. I charged the battery just before the end of the year and all these photos have correct date and time because it can count its way into 2026, but as soon as the battery goes I will never be able to set the clock correctly again.

Great news seeing Android 15 coming to the now four years old Fairphone 4!
I've run an AOSP based on Android 15 on my Fairphone 4 for a long time, but installing custom OS's on phones is just extremely hard, and seeing @Fairphone being able to fulfill their promise of longevity for their products is just wonderful to see! This is a good sign that you can buy a Fairphone 6 today and expect it to last many years.

Meiner behauptet mal wieder, der "Tintenauffangbehälter" wäre voll.

As a #Linux user myself I am not used to the limited hardware support of #MicrosoftWindows 😟
Yesterday I failed to help a coworker installing an older #Canon #scanner. Canon’s drivers were only for Windows XP and last updated long before the end of XP. Today’s Windows can’t do anything with the scanner. Device Manager can barely tell there’s an unknown Canon device present. 🤷♂️
With #Debian you just plug in the scanner and you’re done.

Just for fun, I decided to finally bite the bullet and resurrect ye olde macbook pro (mid-2010) with an SSD and Linux Mint XFCE. I had already upgraded it to 8Gb RAM ages ago. To complete this sacrilege, I hope to use the Chicago95 theme.
I'm not a fan of planned obsolescence, and I'm definitely missing actual ethernet ports on modern mobile hardware. This should be fun.

While I was waiting for the update to #QtCreator 14 to finish, I was wondering whether it would at all run on #macOS #BigSur. Turns out: it wouldn't (of course not). While the old releases are still available for download, downgrading isn't not that easy as many dependencies (especially the plugins) fail to load.
This is very sad.

New blog post!
TICKLESS, a manufacturer of tick repellent devices says that its entry level device should not be opened, and you should not replace the battery. Instead you should throw the device away after six months and buy a new one.
I find those claims unreasonable. And I show how to change the battery in minutes.

I think the trick is to never turn a toaster upside down to clear it from crumbs, as this allows the crumbs to fall into the area where the magnet is.
Of course, the manual doesn't mention this.
Probably better to unplug the toaster and use a vacuum cleaner on the underside vents to suck out the crumbs maybe 2-3 times a year.
Pretty sure they could fix this design flaw, but then they'd sell fewer toasters, right?

Not me. I have a crap-ton of USB-C cables from that one time Apple let Jony Ive design a laptop and the only ports on them were USB-C. (I was pleasantly reminded that I didn't need a dongle to read an SD card yesterday on the new post-Ives machine.)
